trying to setup usb gamepad to control player2....help
« on: March 24, 2009, 06:17:49 am »
posted this over in the software forum, but go no love.....so i'd thought i'd throw it out to a wider audience

So here's the deal.....

I'm building a cocktail cab at the moment....well actually just a mock-up at the this point in time    http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=87362.0

Now my young son likes playing a lot of newer vertical shooters and likes me to join in.....unfortunately i'm on the other side playing upside down just to keep him happy.

So i figured i'd use an old USB gamepad that i have and play right side up and sit next to him,  the only problem is i can't get it to control Player 2, it controls Player 1 by default. I have had a good search but can't find any option for enabling a usb joystick/gamepad for Player 2 only.

...any help is appreciated Cheers!

you need to open mame, launch a game, then hit tab and go to input general, then player 1 controls.  remap them so that they only use the actual controls you want them to.(by default gamepad 1 settings are for player 1).  then remap player 2 controls to use your normal player 2 controls, as well as the gamepad controls

Thanks man,

i did try that, but i only mapped the player 2 controls to the gamepad. It ended up controlling Player 1 and Player 2 at the same time. I'll have to try mapping the Player 1 controls to the cocktail joystick and see if that overrides the gamepad.

I was kinda hoping for a more global approach......but i guess there isn't one :dunno

thanks for you help

that is a global approach..once it is done once, it is done for all games if you do it under Input General.

the problem is that for player 1 button1 for example, by default will be like:

kbd Ctrl or Joy 1 button 0 or mouse b0 or gun 1 b0

or something like that.  you need to go select that input, hit enter to change it, hit esc to make it blank, then set it just to the button you want to actually control it.  do this for all of the player 1 controls  and then you are good to go.  the only way that wouldnt work is if you have already created a cfg file for a specific game that overrides it.
