Admin buttons?
« on: March 23, 2009, 01:53:45 am »
Hi y'all.  I'm converting an old poker machine cabinet to a sit-down cab, putting a single player 6-button CP on it for the kid.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=88073.msg924633#msg924633

I plan to center the joystick with the six-button layout on the right, leaving considerable real-estate to the left of center.
CP will be 23" wide by 7 1/2" deep.

Which admin buttons should I put on it?

Any point in 1 and 2 player buttons?
Maybe pinball buttons on the side too?

What did you guys do?

Thanks, ARCADIAC!

well..you should have player 1 and 2 start buttons for sure.  most admin stuff can be done with shifted buttons, provided that your interface supports that.  i like to have a dedicated exit button and a dedicated pause button.  i have the coin door functional on my cabinet, so you can either insert a coin/token, or  press the coin return button to insert a coin in mame.  i also have a shifted button combo to insert coins as well.

since you are making a single player cabinet...are you using an 8 or 4 way stick?  or perhaps a switchable one?  if that were my cabinet, i'd move the buttons to the center, the stick to the left side, and install a trackball on the right side.

My son Kev has Cerebral Palsy, so I'm leaving a lot of elbow room for the stick and buttons, that's why I 'm thinking of centering the stick.

I'd love a trackball setup but it adds so much more to expense of the cab, I just can't justify it right now.

1p, 2p, exit, pause and coin insert are the admin buttons i'm considering, just for his/my ease of use, shifting would be difficult for him.

4-8 switchable stick definitely, he loves to play Ms. Pacman!

Thanks for your input!

ahh..that makes sense then.  yeah, trackballs do add alot of expense.  i went quite a while without one, but just needed to play centipede so finally i broke down and bought a utrak from ultimarc...they are very nice.

make sure the exit button is located far away from everything else...it really sucks when you are on the last level and the exit button accidentally gets pressed
