Building MAME Cocktail from Original TRON Cocktail
« on: March 16, 2009, 05:30:38 pm »
Im basically putting this together from scratch and as this is my first post and first project in doing something like this, Im glad I came accross this great site that is filled with TONS of great info for newbs like me.  Anyways, those who have made MAME machines, Im wondering if this would be OK to use, since it is small and compact for the Cocktail cab and if it would be sufficient enough to be dedicated to running MAME.  Let me know. Thank you!

To put it bluntly the Arcade Gods will Smite you down if you Mame a TRON cocktail.    Sell it and use the money to build a MAME cab that will not destroy a classic.

DON'T MAME THAT! Find a nice Ms Pac or Galaga cocktail to MAME if you really have to mame a cocktail. TRON cocktails aren't all that common.

Please don't MAME that.

I'm a graduate student, more than 130k in debt, and you wanting to mame that makes me want to buy it, when I clearly can't afford.

Please, please don't mame it.

Ditto. There are plans online for replica pacman/mspacman cocktail cabs. I would ask you to consider that instead. It can't be too hard to find someone who'd like the tron cocktail if you're willing not to convert it.

I've had private emails with this guy and have seen the cabinet.
It was gutted before he got it and prior to that converted into a ms. pacman. (wtf!??)

There's no original hardware or artwork left.  Just the little tag inside the cabinet that says "tron" on it.

Sympathies all around for the original conversion, but I think as long as nothing irreversible is done to it, he should MAME away.

I think he should have mentioned that it was a totally gutted TRON cocktail and he probably would not have received all the pleas to save it that he did. :( :( :(

If there is no original hardware or artwork then I guess MAME it.  Maybe measurements and shape of the cab should be saved before construction begins.

I'll admit the only reason I clicked on this thread was because I saw MAME and TRON and thought to myself NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Well, now that that's all "settled", back to his original question.  Is the board/cpu combo he listed powerful enough? I seem to hear mixed reviews around the ATOM processor doing well for MAME.

The ATOM is certainly powerful enough for the classics, and the classics are what are really going to shine on a cocktail machine anyway, since cocktails were really only around for a short time.

I had a VIA 1GHz motherboard in my cocktail machine, and it easily ran every single cocktail game that MAME supported.  ATOMs are even more powerful.

-----

That said, if he wants to put a flat panel in there, now we may be talking about higher demanding games, and non-cocktail games, then all bets are off that the atom is going to do the job.

-----

Considering there is *plenty* of space inside a cocktail machine for a standard ATX motherboard, there's really no reason to go with a niche product like the atom board.  Take that money and spend it on a fatter CPU and you'll have the possibility of taking your cab out of the classics only realm.

+1. When I get around to building my cocktail (scratch built ms pac style), I'm going to put a decent case-less system in it. The main game list will probably be just games that were designed for cocktail cabs, but I'll have a full game list for when I can't get the kids off of the other mame cab. ;D
