How do you add a picture to a post

I know I'm being a bit thick, but I can't seem to be able to add a picture when I post a message. All I get is a small square with a cross in. Could somebody talk me through it please.  ???

When inputing your message click on Additional Options and Attach: the picture file.  Note there are max size limits.
