Ultimate Button Layout - Need to add a 7th button
« on: March 04, 2009, 10:04:55 am »
I did a lot of research on button layouts and found 3 styles that I liked - straight 6 American layout, curved design with raised middle buttons and the ultimate button layout (see below).  I mocked them all up in cardboard and have decided on the ultimate button layout design that I found on this web page.  It was worked up by Javeryh and XyloSesame on here.

I wanted to add a 7th button to this design to give it a little more flexibility.  I was hoping to get some help and advice as to where to put this 7th button.  Since this design is unique I am not sure what the best location is.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its typical to put it in the curve of the bottom 3, such as shown here in the 8 button layouts, minus the top left button - http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html

Wow, Wish I'd know about that site when I was laying out my CP. Really good info there.

It's going in my bookmarks!

Here's a panel (and a cab) that I based a lot of my layout on, not quite the same but i thought it was a really nice layout at any rate.

I am happy with the button layout I have, just trying to place the 7th button.

Was looking more for, 1 1/2" over and 3/4" down or something like that.

Or a layout showing a 7th button and where it is relative to the other 6.

Former Projects:     4 Player Showcase | Donkey Kong | iCade

Man, that site does have a lot of good info. Haven't seen the joystick comparisons summarized like that before.

Whoever made that site needs to do more work promoting it. I was wondering how I never came across it before on searches, so I tried googling slagcoin joystick controller page and that site still wasn't at the top of the list. How can you not be the first hit if I search for your domain name and the title of your home page?

I say only the OP can answer the OP's question.  Plop your hand down on a mock up and see where your fingers naturally land and want to move, thats where it needs to go.

Top row or bottom it wont matter, your layout has the same degree of tilt for both rows so they are identical in use, so it would depend on your arm position more.

I went with the traditional JP layout and moved the joystick further away, its much more ergonomic than the straight SF style.  Though seems my 1st and 5th button came out abit close for some reason.
