Wire Q
« on: June 26, 2003, 09:33:57 pm »
I just got 100 feet of round wire....its a multi-conductor with 6 conductors. Now the back of the package says its 24awg, is it suppose to be this thin?? The manufacturers are Bell South (phone), are the guages diff. for phone wire?

The higher the number AWG the thinner it is.  It's solid core wire I imagine if it came from bell south.  Most people use 20 - 22 guage stranded for their projects, but that's not to say you can't use *gulp* 24 guage solid core... it's probably the same thickness as cat-5 which people have used with some regularity without problems.

It'll probably be fine, especially since it's handy to you.  There's some added strength because they are bundled together in a multi conductor package, you'll just need to be careful crimping (do the fold over technique) and try not to wiggle/bend the wire too much and mount the wire neatly and provide strain relief...

does that help?   Bob roberts has some guidelines somewhere on his site for which wire to use when, for which application --> IE you use a thicker wire for AC runs than DC runs... *shrug*

if it were me I'd be soldering the quick-connects onto wire that thin, not crimping it.  Might not be possible if you're using insulated connects though.

I know the wire itself can handle any currents that'd be present in the mame machine...   might check to see if it heats up when you light an illuminated pushbutton with it (if you have 'em).

Wire is so cheap, you may as well just get something thicker.

Well people put "R" type stickers on their Dodge Neons but they don't go any faster because of it =P

I didn't see a  question there...  what mean you?

You can use the wire if you want, or you can go out and buy something thicker/better.  It's personal preference.

Here's what  Oscar uses  check out oscar's wireing job so neat and clean it makes me want to drive to michigan or minnesota or whatever and steel his beer!
