Atari 720 Rotary Controller Rebuild Kits?
« on: February 20, 2009, 05:16:09 pm »
Hey Guys,

I'm putting together some 720 controller rebuild kits.  I know this one won't be nearly as popular as the yoke rebuild kits, but it's something that should probably be covered anyway.

I wanted to ask everyone for their input on which items they would like to see included in the "standard" (lowest priced) version of the rebuild kit?  If you're feeling up to the challenge, maybe you could make some suggestions for the middle (deluxe) and top end (premium) kits as well.

Thanks everyone.

This is a tough one.  Not sure it is all the parts you were thinking, but you know I am game when it comes to 720.  Standard is pretty easy.  Deluxe doesn't seem bad to me as those discs are always bent and the optos go bad.  I 'd like to put a spot for the Joystick Handle too as the balls are always beatup.  If you add the Joystick handle then add the bushing as well.

Standard
Upper Roller
Pivot Ball
Lower Roller

Deluxe
Dust Disc
Both Encoder Disc
Opto

Premium
Pivot Arm
Upper Housing
Lower Housing(optional)

What do you think?

Will they be compatible with mame by any chance? If so I want one.

2600's suggestions sound about right, although I might like to see the dust disc in the standard package.

I could see that, but was trying to keep the Standard Package as low as possible.  I considered putting the lower roller in the deluxe package as well.

720 is a hard one to package, because the controllers can degrade in different paths.  It may be beneficial to have an upgraded standard that includes the opto and Dust disc as some people may not need the Encoder Discs.  I've seen more 720 sticks with the encoder shield missing then with it on though.

David I know I'll be in for a Deluxe Package as soon as you can make them available.

Not with current mame.  I've hacked the driver to be able to use one before; I'll update it to work with current mame when the kits come out (and I get mine).

Or you could convince someone to make a USB device that reads the 720 controller but shows up as an analog stick to be current MAME compatible.  I was going to do that but after I bought a 720 I didn't see the need.
