Anyone Heard of This Arcade Game?
« on: February 20, 2009, 03:04:06 pm »
Time Bandits...I know that it was a PC and Atari game back in the 80's, but never an arcade version.  I looked on KLOV and didn't find anything.  I have an opportunity to purchase it (I haven't seen it in person or any pictures) and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it (the arcade version)?

Not sure, but is it possible the seller actually has a Time Soldiers and told you the wrong name?

It'd be great if it was really Time Traveler.

Well it turns out it was a mistake and it's not "Time Bandits".  It's "Time Killers"  They are practically paying me to take it off their hands so I figured I couldn't refuse.  It looks to be a conversion of a Golden Tee machine.  It has the round exposed speakers and the monitor is angled back pretty far.  The control panel is pretty big too.  I'm planning on picking it up after work today.  I'll post back once I get it.

This is what I was thinking you might mean, but figured I was wrong because you said it was a PC and Atari game too (which it wasn't).

Well when I asked the guy what game it was he told me Time Bandits.  I asked him a few times if he was sure that it was a full size arcade MACHINE and not a cartridge or something.  He assured me that it was and when he sent pictures, it was Time Killers.  :laugh2:

Well, that's a bonus in my books.

It was THAT bad of a game.  Just because the computer would cut your head of 3 seconds into the fight, doesn't make it a bad game  ::)

I'd forgotten all about that game. I wish I didn't remember.  :banghead:

I remember it was a big deal in some publication... EGM perhaps? The first time I tried it, it was hell trying to remember which button worked which extremity. Waste of a perfectly good quarter and sixty seconds of my time.

I kind of liked it, but then I was suckered in at the time by all the 'extreme violence' games that seemed to ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- in every do-gooders cup of tea. Had absolutely no fighting structure and was not even comparable as a 'Street Fighter clone', but was a laugh just to see people fighting with no arms!

that game truly is horrible. i remember seeing it at a local arcade when i was younger and thought it would be fun...boy was i wrong.  i got my head chopped off about 4 seconds into the first round...and my experience went down hill from there.

as a side note, this evening, i was playing around on my mame cabinet with my 2 year old(he stands on a chair)..i left the room to get a drink and came back and he had switched to a different game list in mala and launched Blood Storm, which is the equally horrible sequel to Time Killers..i played a few rounds against him, cut off his arms, then we both quickly lost interest.

to get back on topic, i say if you got a good cabinet for a good price, then all is good..even if it is time killers.  make sure you post some pics of the cabinet when you get it.

I'm going to pick it up tonight and they are giving it to me for free.  There's no way I could pass that up.  I'll get some pics of it too.  Like I said before...I think it was a Golden Tee before, so It would be nice to convert it back to that, but I'll know more once I get it to the house.  Wish me luck!

Nice find... especially for free.  You can part it out and keep the monitor, coin doors, etc.  The parts are Time Killers parts go for a pretty penny on e-bay (which you can use towards the restore of the machine into something else).

Take a look at the related e-bay items at the bottom of the page:

Well I picked it up last night.  Needless to say, it's a POS.  It looks to be one of those machines that a distributor built just to put a game in it out of some plywood and slapped some laminate on it back in good ole' 1992!  So unfortunately, it wasn't anything dedicated to restore it to.

I have no clue if anything works on it because his dog chewed off the power cord.  I really didn't have much time to go through it though.  I know that the tube is a Zenith 25" but the neckboard has some burns on it :( . One the plus side, the power supply looks fairly new.  The board MAY be ok.  All of the Roms are there and there aren't any burnt spots.  The only thing I got around to doing was taking the coin door off, taking apart the CP, and I took off the marquee (that was taped on the inside with electrical tape!).  There was never even a light installed for it.

So much Time Killers hate.

As a drinking man's fighting game, where you arent worried about gameplay, balance, strategy etc, Time Killers freaking rules.  Its one of the top 5 played games on my machine.

When we have a get together at our house, everyone loves Time Killers. It's a terrible game, but some people just like hacking each others limbs off. Go figure.

Exactly, its a great party game, even the girls like it.  Nothing like disrespecting your opponent with an opening decapitation move that connects while being halfway drunk.

Dude...I just looked this game up to find the special moves. I played this game alot at a local department store. I never knew how to do the fatalities - I assumed they were complicated like MK fatalities and different for every person.

For anyone who doesn't know, the super secret way to do an instant fatality in this game is...

....to hit all 5 buttons at once - with ANY character. That is ultra LAME.

You only need to hit 4, the head button (button 5) is not necessary.

While if it does connect it is game over, if it doesn't it leaves you incredibly open to counter attacks, and you have to be at the correct distance to decapitate.  If you aren't, it will just hit them normally, or whiff.   It seems like you take extra damage if hit while you try to decapitate.  Just spamming it over and over will usually get you killed, depending on your (and opponents) level of inebriation/skill.

It is game over any time you get a dizzy though, and know the correct spacing.

Time Bandit was also the title of a game for the TRS-80 Color Computer released by Color Shack in 1983 - a loose interpretation of Tutankham.

Was that a TRS-80? they only came out in B&W, surely. I had one as a kid. Or was it a expansion available later? The original TRS-80 came with 16k RAM + B&W.

wiki'ed it - TRS80 color Computer was a different computer to the original TRS80 (just to be confusing).

Pronounced TRaSh 80 for those who've never used one.

I learned BASIC on a mighty dual floppy black and white trash 80, then smoked a dime bag, listened to Dio and forgot all of it except what the computer was.  ;D

Ours was a TRS-80 clone by Dick Smith Electronics, called a "System 80".  It was so retro that it even had wood-grain panels on the sides.  It had a cassette drive, so when loading programs you would sit there for 15 minutes with your fingers crossed, hoping that some bit a static glitch wouldn't creep into the load and cause a checksum error ....

It is still in a cupboard somewhere!

I did PC support for Tandy for a few years many moons ago, we got to meet the guy who originally designed the TRS-80.  :laugh2:
