I want to change the 5 pin connector on some  JLF-TP-8T sticks so that the pins are vertical rather than bending 90 degrees as present.

This is a couple of pictures, excuse the camera phone pics:

Is there anywhere where I could buy a similar vertical connector and solder it in its place?

The pin width is 0.88mm (0.035") and the pitch spacing is 2.5mm (0.098"). The overall width of the pins is 10.9mm (0.429mm).

Just buy regular PCB connector pins like this:

Thanks Blanka. http://akihabarashop.jp can order them in for me but they are a special order and they are too busy at moment.

I searched for some PCB connector pins like you suggested and found [these] that should do the trick. Thanks.

If you are in the UK you can try the RS-online shop I got the image of. They have no shipping fee and deliver in 24 hours. You need a business number though.

Thanks again. I'm going to try Leotronics.co.uk first. They claim to be a family owned company with a 'superior level of customer service' so they should hopefully be able to sell me 10 or so fingers crossed. If not i'll try RS.

The latching mechanism on the stock connector (JST NH series) can interfere with the usage of standard pin strips due to the additional protrusion.  You may have to chop it off the cable.  You won't get the latching behavior either way, though standard pin strips may be a little looser than the original connector.  Might want to consider some longer than usual pin strips to get around this and provide additional engagement for better strength.

0.1" (2.54mm) connectors are also very common and will work fine over only 5 pins like you have if they're all you can find.

If you can find it, an exact matching connector will have vastly better performance in terms of pull-out resistance.  Unfortunately, it seems impossible to buy this connector series in small quantity in the USA except in certain limited sizes (mostly the 3 position).  Dunno if UK people are any better off.

B5P-SHF-1AA(LF)(SN) is the JST part number for the exact connector you have asked for (vertical, 5 pin header).

Thanks for the info.

This is the data sheet for the JST connector:

This is the data sheet for the connector pins from Leotronics:

As you can see the relative dimensions are identical so they should work fine.

From the looks of it, that Leo Electronics part *IS* a JST NH series or clone.  Lucky you.  I unfortunately can't buy those very easily in small quantity here in the USA (I have frequently desired to).  I was figuring they'd just have standard pin strips, which would not mate nearly so nicely.

I see several other JST connector lines on their website (and some Molex ones, too).  Handy place to have available.

Well it turns out that they dont stock them and we would have to order 500-1000.  ::)

I'm going to get akihabarashop to order some in for me, I'm not in a rush for them as i'm just getting stocked up for stick production.

Would you like me to ask them to get some extra in if they are not already? Im going to get 10-20 depending on price. How many would you be after?

RS sells the JST's by the 10:

Those are the EH and XH series (JST, like Molex and Amp, makes a TON of different connectors).  I can actually buy those here in qty. 10.  Digi-Key stocks them, amongst others.  The NH series, however, seems to be almost impossible to find unless I'm willing to buy a couple hundred of an individual part number (Digi-Key does stock the 3 position cable side housing, and they have the contacts).

RS is also not in the USA.

I don't need any of the particular connector you're buying.  I actually need the other side (cable side), and in several different sizes (and I only need 1 of each size).  Makes getting them tough.  I'd be willing to buy maybe 10 of each + 100 contacts, but even that's proving to be hard, and the price actually adds up.
