Gyration Remote

Anyone using one of these to control volume on their cab?

I was thinking it would be nice to have a remote to control volume on my cab especially when I was using it as a jukebox.

I am wondering however if I have to have the MC program loaded to use it?

I have the previous model and love it. I use it on a mac hooked into my home theater set up, so I doubt you have to have MC installed to use it

way better than the wiimote

it has a learning function so you can do just about anything with it, to anything with a IR remote

it controls the mouse and basic media functions like volume, play, pause, forward, back ect. through 2.4gh wireless

I control Itunes, Front row, DVDplayer and use it as a mouse to browse the internet and it also controls my receiver too.

Sounds Cool! So there is no reason I should not be able to use it with something like winamp for windows volume control, pause, skip track etc.?

I don't see any reason why not. it's made to just that in windows

It's not even listed as mac compatible and it worked right out of the box

Though I don't have the air remote I have had a gyration mouse for years now, and I just wanted to recommend a free program that I use with it. It's called StrokeIt (don't laugh... well OK laugh) When used in conjunction with a program such as Sound Volume hotkeys you can use it to control the volume of your PC. Stokeit has programed gestures for various programs such as Winamp. Works great for me. It is more versatile than the program that comes with the Gyration mouse. One question I have regarding the air remote. Will it let you power on the PC?

Edit.... you should also be able to play some light gun games with it.

 :laugh2:

Ok... Wait...  :laugh2:

So yeah, the remote seems like it would handle all the features then of the mouse and more.

I just think it would be awesome to have a remote to control the volume of my cab when I am using it both for video games as well as a juke box. My main concern was even though my PC has media center on it as part of vista 64, I don't use it. I just want the remote to control programs like Winamp and just plain ol' volume levels in general. Seems like from what you guys are saying here, it should handle that pretty well.

I don't think there would be a better fit for what you want to do out there. I did want to add one thing about the Gyration products in general. If you compare them to a Wii remote, they are much more accurate with pointing (using it as a mouse) They really have the technology down pat.

I'm never going to get that kinda range with a Wii remote am I? I am talking about the non-line of site range. In other words I would like to be able to control my music volume not being in the same room and from the sound of it, the Gyration will handle that just well.

So it will work through floors and walls? What is the range or does a lot of that depends on the receiver as well?

Maybe I will give the Wii Remote a try, I have two of them but I do not have any blue tooth on my PC (yet).  ;D

Ya know I was thinking... This does have the display play list on it and that is a nice feature, also there would not be all those hoops to jump through to get it to work either. I mean I have not tried the Wii remote but it looks to be a pretty lenghty write up! Not saying it is not worth the time or the effort but this product looks to be very solid.

It has a 100ft RF range. Not the IR part that controls external components obviously.

The only downside is the price... $150.00 compared to the Wii remote.

Yeah I was able to find it for $125. I just really like the play list LCD, it's a nice touch!

Was reading a review... "Another limitation is that you must be logged on the PC via the console in order to control iTunes with the remote. So, for example, if you are logged in to the PC via Remote Desktop then you can't control iTunes. Again, not a huge deal... "

Too bad that is the case.

Now your just being picky! Just buy the thing already, you obviously want one!! ;D  I'm not sure I understand what they are trying to say in that review. Unless they are saying that it won't control itunes ON a remote computer.... but why would you do that in your situation anyway?

They are saying that you can't remote log into a PC, start iTunes and then control the volume with the remote.

Did I mention before that these gyration mice work great for playing light gun games. If you buy this remote it will have the added bonus of being able to play say, Area 51 or Aliens the Gun with it. I use mine for this all the time and love it. I had this idea for a hack a while back and did some googleing and found a few folks who had beaten me to it. When I get some time and track down a second gyro mouse and a toy gun that I like, I'm going to have at it! (Though I will try to do better than the duct tape method)
