what is a 6 digit counter for?

I saw one inside of a Golden Tee that I parted out. Is it used for counting coins? I didn't remove it from the cab because it was full of old, dried-up Pepsi.

Yes, it is a coin counter.

Some jurisdictions require coin counting meters by law so the game manufacturer includes them.

What the heck for? I can't picture an IRS guy showing up to read the meters...

Thanks for the replies everyone.

To ensure perhaps that the software's dip screen coin count matches the dials. I suppose in case machines have been set overpriced or if free play has been used when it shouldn't be.

In some jurisdictions amusement games are regulated and as part of the licensing, the licensing agency requires meter reading reports monthly which are then turned over to taxing authorities to ensure that meter readings match reported money income.

Some amusement operators require meter readings from their route money collectors to ensure honesty.
