Might pick one or two up so I can house all my arcade junk.

You have all that backed up right? You know about the horrible problems with those drives?

Actually, no I haven't heard. I've been toying with buying a $109 1TB Seagate at Frys. Have they gone to Hell that badly since Maxtor's purchase?

Me too and i have nothing but trouble with it. I'm moving all my stuff off that drive onto my WD My Book 1Tb's and offloading the 1.5tb external. I will wait for WD to bring out a bigger drive i think.

Anyone with a Seagate 1.5 TB drive is begging to lose data right now.

All reviews from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16822148337

Just the reviews from the last 2 weeks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16822148337

Would not put any of my data on one of those drives. Stinks, I really really really need a couple of 1.5 tb drives. Now I'm going to hold out for the WD 2tb drives I think.

I love me some WD drives....though I never really use any hard drive as a "backup" solution, unless it's raid 5 or better. I just linked the deal because it's nice to be able to have the "portability" of your arcade junk. Still pondering purchasing one or two.

Maybe have one for all arcade related material, and the other for console materials.

As if by magic...

Can't be long before the 2tb My Books are out (I know they exist now but they have 2 1tb drives in there).

And to think I'm still running a computer with a puny 140 gigs of space. I completely missed the 3 and 5 hundred gig trend....

The 1.5TB drives are okay if you have the newer firmware.  Firmware SD15, SD17 and SD18 are bad, but SD37 (I think) and CCxx are okay.  I'm running five of them with no problems.  All backed up, of course.  ;)

You can run the serial number through Seagate's web site to find if you have an affected drive.
http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931

I think I'll be going back to WD for the 2TB drives.

I'm hoping that's the case, but I haven't heard any data to back that up yet (other than your own, of course). Any links to independent review or posted user reviews?

Hmmm. I was thinking of getting a 1tb, but someone said to hold out for the 1.5s . I guess I'll either go 1 or wait for 2.

Pfft! Amatuer ... we've got a 20gb and a 40gb in our main machine, and a single 20gb in my Wife's work machine  :laugh2:
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

Heh, I've got the guts of an old BH6 PC all over with the 8GB hooked up to my laptop. The largest this particular machine has seen... the desktop, not the laptop. I had a 3GB drive installed in the old one originally.

Somewhere around I've got an Atari computer/console hybrid with no hard drive.  :P

Meanwhile, will some explain to me why Windows DD is finding more bytes than the Hex Editor does? ??? ???

Kind of sucks to have a formerly good company (in my experience) like seagate make such a mistake as releasing bad firmware on their drives (kind of an important piece of the puzzle). Seems like it would have been noticed in "testing", maybe they fired that division...

Maybe there is a reason Seagate has lowered their warranty from 5yrs to 3yrs now...

I just Googled each firmware revision along with the word Seagate.  There are people posting the same experiences in a lot of different forums, and it looks like Seagate have tried to supress information on their own forum (at least to begin with).  The one thing I read in common with faulty drives was firmware revisions SD15, SD17 and SD18.  I have three SD37 drives and two CC1H drives so I had a vested interest in digging around.
By this point Seagate had put up a serial number checker on their site, and mine all passed clear.

I updated the firmware on my drive before I even put 1mb on there. Had the drive for months now, zero problems.
