Asteroids artwork file with screen burn-in
« on: January 29, 2009, 11:57:07 am »
I've been using MAME v.103 for awhile but recently went to v.127
Unfortunately I noticed that my artwork files no longer worked
and found out the reason why:  link
-- basically, there was a change after v.107.

So I downloaded the new artwork from the site link above
and tried some out.  The new Asteroids layout looks like this:

which is ok, but I miss the screen burn-in of my old artwork file.
It always impressed my friends that someone actually thought
to simulate that.

So, I messed around with the .lay file today and think I have
an acceptable workaround.  The zip file is too big to attach, but
I've attached the .lay file and the burn-in image, so all you will
have to do is save the attachments and add them to your
asteroids.zip artwork file.  Hope you like them, let me know!

Here's a preview of what it looks like:

Additional note:  you'll need to rename the asteroid.lay.txt file
to asteroid.lay before adding it to your asteroid.zip file

I wouldn't call that burn-in, but I like it much better.

Infidel! How dare you ruin the purity of the MAME! You shall be punished for your transgression! :bat

Actually... I can't see the pictures anyways. I guess photobucket was just added to the list of blocked sites at work.

I'll let you know what I think when I get home.

So what's burn-in?
Always thought it was when characters "burned" on the screen because they were on there for a long time.

Oh...  I didn't show an image of me PLAYING the game before.  Here's another image, this time from my own site (see if you can see this one Lion)

Now you can see the burned-in image of the 1 Coin 1 Play text...

Yeah, I'm a real heathen...   :afro:

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I've always been a fan of the burn-in version. Thanks!

Funny. If my Meteor would have a burn in like that, I'd replace the tube ASAP.

IRT RayB

That's not too bad actually. I don't remember ever seeing an Asteroids with any burn-in but from what I can recall from other vectors, the burn-in you have there seems to be a little on the severe side. I recall burn-in being a little softer.

Of course, it's been years since I've seen an honest to goodness vector in the wild (or anywhere else for that matter) so my memory might be a little off. :dizzy:

Funny. If my Meteor would have a burn in like that, I'd replace the tube ASAP.

Given the excessive number of vector monitors readily available on the cheap, I'm sure most people would be more than happy to replace the tube.  ;)

There is an Asteroids at a local arcade here in town, and it looks exactly like that artwork!

I have to say, that burn-in simulation is pretty damn impressive!

I can't take credit for the actual burn-in image, just the
lay file... the image actually comes from the artwork
file I was using with v103, which I found off the net.
I'd give credit but I forget who did it.

Update on the lay file -- tried it on my machine at home,
there's some more work to do... hard to see the
shots being fired.  Will work on it tonight/tomorrow,
see what happens.

EDIT:  looked in the original art file and found
it was done by MarbleMad, with some thanks to
CADweazle for the bezel scan.  Big thanks guys!

EDIT 2:  Ugh, not sure what's going on... shots can't be
seen at 640x480 resolution (my tv) but anything above
that they're ok.  THe old layout file works ok though.
(the one from v103).  Hmmm....

Figured it out... it was my MAME.ini file, calling for D3D instead of DDRAW...

But, it did give me a chance to update the lay file to add in the tint overlay
from the original artwork.  The tint basically causes the vector graphics
to look a little more translucent.

Also attached is my mame.ini in case you had the same shot problem
I had.
