I know I'm a total noob at MameWah
« on: January 28, 2009, 07:38:31 pm »
I know I know I am a total noob at mamewah guys but I am really having trouble getting mamewah to work right with mame  :hissy: I have been trying for at least 3-5 hours and searching for a way to get this to work but I think my lack of experience is definately what is working against me.

whenever I edit the mamewah file to tell it where to go to find the .exe for mame it finds it but when I use what I think is the "command line version" of mame like some websites are saying that I should use if I am using MameWah as my front end, it just will not work and I get this message that pops up and it usually kicks me out of mamewah when I choose either option, here is a picture of the message

(if you can't read the image here is the link to it)http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu234/kruluk23/mamewah.jpg

so whats the deal? am I just using the wrong version of mame and is that why it is not working? could it be that I am editing the document in mamewah incorrectly? I am so very confused please help me

(This should go in the software section, methinks) ...

Could you post your .ini file?
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

Which version of mame should I be running if I want to use mamewah? I can't seem to find a clear answer.

Well .. the command-line version. Not MAMEUI (formally called MAME32) ... hang on, I'm going to look for something real quick-like ...

Here's an example of what a typical mame.ini should look like:

emulator_title                            Mame

### List Generation Settings ###
rom_path                                  C:\MAME\roms
rom_extension                            zip
dat_file
nms_file
catver_ini_file
list_generation_method                    rom_folder_vs_listxml

### Execution Settings ###
pre_emulator_app_commandlines
emulator_commandline                      C:\MAME\mame.exe {nodosbox}{nosafelaunch}
post_emulator_app_commandlines
general_app_commandlines

The verison that has no front-end of its own ...

Could you try and change this line:

emulator_commandline                      C:\MAME\mame.exe {nodosbox}{nosafelaunch}

... not too sure if the "{nodosbox}{nosafelaunch}" is needed, but it's worth a shot ...

I just tried it and it seemed like it was going to work but then I heard windows make a sound and the computer screen just stayed black and I had to alt ctrl del to shut down.

So basically any version that is not mame32 is a command line version right? Stupid question but I want to be for sure.

Correct.

Ok ... change "{nosafelaunch}" to "{safelaunch}" ... see what happens.

I just tried it again with the safelaunch, immediately the MAME usage information message in my screenshot I posted earlier pops up. I have tried using different versions of mame but the only one that the "mame usage information" screen doesnt pop up on is mame32

here is a link to the error message http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu234/kruluk23/mamewah.jpg

sheesh  :-\ ... sorry I couldn't help; but fear not. Someone far smarter than I may come along and figure it out.

Hey sorry if I was mean :( wasn't trying to be. Does it matter if I have ran the command line mame outside of mame wah and configured it by itself first? Or does that have nothing to do with it?

Not at all (both to you beaing mean (you're not) and running MAME outside of MAMEwah) .. I just feel bad that I couldn't help .. I'm not at home ATM, so I can't look at my MAMEwah ini file to be sure .. but it seems like the MAME executable is not being passed the ROM name ...

... hmm, you may want to google "mamewah ini examples" ...

Have you even created a mame.ini (for the actual program, not mamewah)?

If I'd just looked at the thread instead of the first pic, I could've ended this earlier. :)

"Have you even created a mame.ini (for the actual program, not mamewah)?"

No I don't know how I don't think I have... Do I need to do that?

I just got it to work by adding the [name] command. But what does "Have you even created a mame.ini (for the actual program, not mamewah)?" mean and why do I need to do it? Would it help?

Thanks for all the help everyone I greatly appreciate it. I thought this would never work!! I appreciate it a lot. Thank you all.

Go to your MAME folder (the actual program) and look in the INI directory. There should be a MAME.INI in there. If not, run mame as
mame -createconfig

Sounds like from the edit to your post that you probably have the INI already.

Forget dos.

Just click Start, then Run.
Type this (change according to your folder structure):

c:\mame\mame.exe -createconfig
