Good resource for Screen Measurements?
« on: January 28, 2009, 01:18:04 pm »
Anyone know of a good resource for "actual" screen measurements, (as opposed to, say on NEWEGG, they publish the measurements of the overall unit, including the height and width of the stand, which for an LCD is kind of odd).

Anyway, My cab has some strict monitor size requirements, and I'm trying to find an LCD that'll fit reasonably.

Essentially, I have to use a flatscreen LCD, the thinner the better, but 3-4" thick is nominal.

I've got basically any amount of width, but I'm limited to about 17" height total. Since the screen will be mounted, the base/stand won't factor in.

On my desk I have an Eizo, and because of their strict demands for backlight uniformity, I bet it is about the thickest of all LCD screens, and measures 85mm deep. So with room for 3-4 inch, all screens must fit depth-wise.
Regarding the height, most screens have a bezel of 20mm or so, my 24 inch is 15 inch tall. So I guess you could buy any 26 or 27 inch screen. 30 inch would be 15.9 inch net screen height, but I don't know if 2560x1600 is such a great resolution to drive.

Eizo mentions sizes with and without feet on the site. Maybe other manufacturers do that too:
Quote from: Eizo SX2761W specs
Afmetingen (bxhxd) 630 x (493 tot 611) x 255 mm,
630 x 412 x 86 mm (zonder voet = without foot)

Calculate your self using 4 to 3 ration of standard screen if you have it horizontal to get the maximum screen area you would get a 27 inch diagonal.  Height would be about 16.5 and width would be about 22 inches for an area of 336 square inches.  That does not take into account the bezel but it is a start.   If you want a wide screen 16 by 9 ration then you would get 34 inches diagonal and that would give a height of 16.5 and a width of about 30.  And an area of 495 square inches.  And again it does not take into account the bezel.  You could do what I did and take a tape measure to a electronic shop and measure them.  Depending on you exact use you may not want to go that big.  I have a 24 inch wide screen that is 15 inches high and 22 inches wide.  That includes the bezel.  The screen is about 12 by 20 viewable area.  It is in its box now because I am in the middle of moving.

Careful what you wish for you may get it!!

Very few places post more info than what the manufacturer supplies.  CDW goes as far as stating "Specifications are provided by the manufacturer" above anywhere it lists specs.  So if you look at eizo monitors specs at newegg's (or cdw), it lists the dimensions with and without feet just like the eizo web site.  Basically, if the manufacturer don't supply what you're looking for, no retailer web site will have it. :-\

Some review sites will give more stats than what's supplied by the manufacturer, but it's hit and miss as exact dimensions aren't that much requested spec.
