Car speaker and amp in jpm cabinet
« on: January 26, 2009, 01:55:35 pm »
Now my current jukebox conversion is all most complete apart from getting the coin mech to work but im working on that now the normal jpm speakers in the cab are not good enough so what i plan to do is

Buy a pc power supply and cut of all the connecters to leave me just the 12v output
Then wire it to a small car amp 150watt - 200watt
Then replace the current speakers with some car speakers around 80 watt each

Will this work or is alot harder to do then i think?

Never cut cables! Just buy a PC supply with separate cables, and buy a fitting molex-connector and wire that yourself. Sometimes you need to use some 5V too, otherwise the PSU goes into protect mode.

This is a PSU with cables that can be disconnected. Very easy for your purpose.

He will also need a way to turn it on with the PC, it would be better patching into the same PSU as the PC as long as you have a beefy enough PSU.

Agreed...... if the power supply that's in there now is beefy enough, or just replace that one with one that is beefy enough.....then you can use one of the 12v lines that are already there. (I'm sure there's some not being used)
I have a 100watt amp in my juke and it works just fine.
Anything bigger than that and you may be pushing it without a separate power supply.

The default speakers are supposed to 20 Watts or at least in all the cabs i have seen and they are not very loud at all. I think they are 5 1'4" from memory, i know you can buy car speakers rated at 200 watts that will be a direct swap and you just need to put in a car amp then.

You will not get great sound with this because of where the speakers are mounter and the best solution would be to build a speaker box in the bottom section of the cab as there is a lot of unused space there.

The oval shapes on the side can also be removed if you want to pipe sound out through there.

A direct swap with a car speaker will not be much better then the stock one, since there is no box behind in a typical cabinet.

20 watts is more then enough for a cab that you are playing at - sure, it wont fill a room with sound, but that becomes a jukebox and IMO you are better off with external speakers anyway.

Is there an echo in here.....

What do you mean that becomes a jukebox? That is what he is trying to do.... Convert the think into a jukebox, apparently these cab's were actually used as jukeboxes in some countries anyway. Would be interesting to see how the sound was set up in those.

That post shows one but he says it's a seaburg wall-o-matic? It isn't and it has got some light tower on top that looks like it's from some game so maybe he had the wrong image up?

that image looks the same as my unit but yes i am converting to a jukebox allmost done and still runs all the games to so big bonus because its a gamebox 6 and its the best model out also the sound in the cabs are rubish thats why im trying different speaker set ups outside the unit because every speaker i install inside sounds rubbish due to them not been boxed if you get me

No, just repeating what you said since the more people that say things the more likley people are to pay attention to them.

Brainfart there.. meant speaker not jukebox.

I'm not getting any image at all now, and cant recall what was there but I thought it was just normal cabinet like - otherwise I may be confusing this with another thread

I think it would be better to build a speaker box in the bottom of the cab. There is more than enough space where the coin trays and pc tray is to put in a decent speaker box. You might need to modify the bottom access panel to add a speaker grille of sorts but it would be a tidier solution.

For the woofer, yes, but ideally you want to sound to be coming from ear height, so the tweeters/mid would be better up at screen height or so for listening when standing in the room. Too low down and it means that its very easy to be blocked as well, not a problem for the bass but the highs are very sensitive to having someone or something in the way.

That's the issue with this cab. There isn't much room at the top to really put a decent speaker box in there without some serious modifications. Boxing in the speakers though would prevent them interfering with the screen which is seems even the stock ones tend to do.

I did have a second look, there is room behind the screen to mount a speaker each side of the cab and box it in. It would involve a bit of wood work though to get the speakers pointing forward and still be recessed in there.
