Instant Sheller problem
« on: January 23, 2009, 11:45:42 pm »
I installed Instant Sheller and I can'
t access windows at all when I exit Mala. So I want to remove it and the instructions say just run it again. But as all I get is a black screen when I exit Mala I can't call it up to remove it. Help! Hours of work in this software setup and I really don't want to have to do it all again

I've never used it, but I recall reading somewhere thet you need to press ctrl+alt+del, then click task manger, then new task, and type in "explorer.exe".
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

Did you try to set mala to run Explorer upon exit? There is an option in MALA to do that. (IE Mala was set up as the OS shell, instead of explorer, so you need to have Mala run explorer when it exits otherwise you have no OS shell.)

I had this exact same problem. This is the reason I decided to get rid of this program.

I had to press CTRL, ALT and DEL to get the TASK MANAGER, choose "FILE", "NEW TASK (run)" and type explorer.exe

This will load Windows explorer, which will give you access to do what you need.

You might need to do these steps from Safe mode. Once you load the Instant Sheller program, just use the UNDO feature to get rid of it.

Hope this helps.

Now that you know the emergency Ctrl-Alt-Del way out, next time you set it up, have MALA run explorer upon exit, ok. :)  (You can test this without shelling mala, just have it run something like Netscape or Napster or AOL-Online or even Wolfenstein3D or that new game from id called Doom. ;) If it runs the test program then you configured mala in the proper way to run explorer if you decide to shell mala again)

True, but what does one do when one wants to perhaps install a new emulator, or add games, etc?

My cab is in a constant state of flux, so I have the need to constantly go back into windows to add/remove/change things.

I have a problem with Instant Sheller and Maximus Arcade.. I have set Maximus Arcade as a shell using Instant Sheller and I have put the "Windows\explorer.exe" to run on exit of Maximus Arcade. But in the last few days there is no shell coming back ! Only a windows explorer window and no icons on desktop ! I cant figure out why this happens because the trick with explorer.exe used to work just fine when I first used it in Maximus... Has anyone noticed this problem and please give a solution ?

I'm sure that fixing instant sheller to work correctly is a lot easier than fixing the world...

It doesn't sound to me like Instant Sheller is not working as it's designed to. You have various options for hiding Windows and thats what it does from hiding your desktop icons, making your wallpaper black and various other things.

If you have set Instant Sheller to hide your icons my guess is you can show them by right clicking on your desktop and selecting Arrange Icons By->Show Desktop Icons.

Unfortunately there is no window showing up when you right click in the black background...

Instant sheller its a great piece of software, works great, but the future you are looking for , has not been implemented into it, i told you, you can unshell or you can go to the gameex forums, and kindly ask tom to implement a function like the one you need, i say this because i agree with you, i wish i didnt had to unshell everytime i had to do something... good luck  ;D

I've had all kinds of problems with instant sheller

I got rid of it and followed the wiki for Hiding window and it works much better (everything works as it's supposed to and stays that way)

It does take a while to do though

Finally I found the solution !!!!!!!! (at least that solution works for me..)

I had to check the "Change Shell only for current user" option !!! Now with the "explorer.exe" trick desktop and icons show up and you can work in Windows without the need to unshell again !!!
