MacMAME OS 8.6 *Now w/ pics* ha!
« on: January 21, 2009, 01:32:29 pm »
After watch eBay and saving money for a Ms Pacman cocktail table I've decided to build one with an old iMac.

That's all I have for now.  Tonight I'll reboot and wipe the Mac clean, load up MacMAME 0.36 and keep reading the forums.  Thanks for all insight here.

I'll be keeping an eye on your thread. I recently refused one because of lack of space. Might get it after all if it's not too difficult to setup. Keep us posted with all the details.

I got MAME and Ms Pacman loaded up.  Played a few games with the keyboard.  I can't wait to get a joystick.  I've been reading a lot and have a bunch of web pages bookmarked, still think I have more questions than answers.  A friend and I will work on a table mock up this weekend but what I need to figure out first is for a 2-player cocktail setup...
How do you get the screen switch 180 for each player?
The iMac screen is only 15-inches so I may just make a 1-player, mini table.

im runnin 2 cabs with old beige G3 300mhz macs running os 8.6 i use macmame .57 with no issues. in fact it runs better than the 750mhz g4 i tried to upgrade too.

one of my cabs is a cocktail; in macmame you can set the games to be in "cocktail" mode it does the screen flipping (in the games that work) automatically, however with my setup the main screen and mame gui are still horizontally oriented while the games play vertically, so i have to turn my head sideways to pick my game...

not a big deal really IMHO.

let me know if you have any more macmame questions i can try to help

Since you're using the classic OS, take advantage of the Launcher.  Set MacMame as the default app for .zip files, then put shortcuts to all your ROMs in the Launcher Items folder.  I had mine in alphabetized subfolders.  I also had an Other Apps subfolder with things like iTunes (4) in it.

Best MacMame interface by far.

 :notworthy:
Thanks for the tips MinerAl.

I still haven't figured out the 2-player cocktail video setting.
I think I need a newer version (than 0.36) but I could just be  :banghead:

cheers

Yep, got it. Thanks again.

I thought there was some way to manually set the screen size.  I can only get a 2X (kinda small) and 3X (too big).

While figuring out the cocktail setting and trying to get a rotated "full screen", I changed a menu setting so that when I hit return on the keyboard the volume bar pops up...arrrgghhh
back to tab menu but can't select any menu items, only scroll up and down with errors.  wtf???
just venting here.

I don't remember which version it was that they added RAVE support, but it's worth checking out.
It stretches to fit the screen, and blurs the edges of the pixels.
There was almost no performance loss on my G3/300 B&W, and the picture looked tons better.

Now thats what I need. Ive been running MacMAME (dont know which version) on an old G3 PPC and it only fills about half of the screen. I have the machine currently running Tiger for the usb modem support.

I've got MAME setup to run automatically at startup so I'm not sure why to put the ROMs in the Launcher.   :dunno

I think I'm best off with MacMAME 0.36 on this old OS 8.6.   Some other games I tried (like asteroids) take up nearly the full screen.  MsPacman could use some stretching but it doesn't look like I'll be able to take advantage of RAVE.

I found there was a RAVE pluggin on 0.36a.  Not sure how it works or what it does but I dropped it from the MAME 0.36a Pluggin folder into my extensions.

Now what I did next, I'm not sure if I could have done the same thing before I added the RAVE extension.
I found I could get Ms Pacman and various other games to display full screen in cocktail mode, 2 different ways.  Either set the MAME video at 3 X 3 and the monitor/screen at 1024x768  75hz.
Or set at 2 X 2 and 640x480  117 hz.

The 3 X 3 settings is better when not running MAME so I'm sticking with that.
I am psyched!

I'm leaning towards getting a Mag-Stik Plus Ball-Top but...

You have to select the RAVE plug-in from the video tab at the game select menu.
After that it will stretch all games to fit the screen.
This makes a few of the square games look a bit funny, but improves the looks of the vast majority of games, IMO.

Just run it with OSX 10.2.8 and MacMame. Way better than the OS 8/9 crap.

My machine will not support OSX.  I'm only looking to play old school arcade games so I'm very happy with OS 8.6 and MacMAME 0.36a.

a g3 300mhz runnin 8.6 runs games faster than a g4 750mhz, i know from experience, stick with 8.6 and you can go up to macmame .59 and you will be fine! thats what i use on 2 mame cabs

You have to select the RAVE plug-in from the video tab at the game select menu.

ahhhh, now I got it.  Thanks.
It's barely bigger in Ms Pacman and Galaga but I'll take it.  Thanks again.

Well I'm not quite ready for a Project Anouncement...but I was hoping to play with a Logitech Attack 3 Joystick but nope, not without upgrading to OS9.  Oh well, I'll take it back and order a real joystick.

iMAME will be done.
