Did my first MAME update in years - any good new games?

I stopped updating each version back in 2003 or 2004 so it has been a while.  This past weekend I updated to the newest build, wow we have come a long way!  I probably wound up with 80 gigs worth of files.

Once I was finished I started going through the list to see what new games have been added that I would like to have on my arcade machine.

I didn't come up with many new titles that I would like to play (there were probably 1000 new mah-jong titles since I last updated however)

What I did find was :

Metal Slug 4
Metal Slug 5
Progear (cool looking side scrolling flying shoot em up)

That was it.  I did see that gauntlet dark legacy and gauntlet legends were added, but when I tried to run them it said I didn't have the right files, plus I doubt the old pc inside my arcade would run them well anyway.

So for you guys who do a lot of updates, can you think of any other cool games that I should add besides the three above?

What version did you update from and what version did you update to?


Anyhoo, you can go to mameworld.net/maws and do a deluxe search to
find out which games have been added/updated from version to version...

I believe I went from .083 to .129. 

Thanks for the search, I took a look and it's a lot of fighting games and gambling type games and not much else. 

That's kind of why I quit updating back in 2003 or so, it seemed like each new release just added a bunch of gambling games.  Most of the good stuff had already been emulated by that point.

Golden Tee was added in .92.  I think that's an item to note.

They've started adding the laserdisc games, including FireFox -- which hadn't been emulated by Daphne.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

Thanks guys these are great, I will try them out tonight. 

If any of you have a trackball on your arcade machine and you are using xp or vista, I recommend you take a look at a new pc game called "Crayon Physics Deluxe".  It just came out a few weeks ago and it is a natural fit for arcade machines.

Now I just need to look at upgrading the pc inside my arcade.  It is woefully out of date to play some of this newer mame stuff, it's a 1.1 ghz Duron with 128 megs of ram :(

You are bound to find a performance upgrade on some games
w/ a better processor in the newer MAME version.
For example, I could never get Avengers in Galactic Storm
to play at all on my old 1.1 Ghz but when I upgraded to an
Athlon x2 last year it works great.

If you're money tight, another option is to not upgrade and
squeeze what you can out of that 1.1ghz, in which case MAME .129
may not be the best version for you...

One game I had to add to the post v .83 list  ( was added around
v .90 or so)... The Crystal of Kings... love that one.

what does the new artwork engine do?  the old stuff looked good to me, can't wait to see it look even better.

never heard of teeter totter but I will check it out

Not only this, but the recent DK re-write seems to have affected game play, making it less predictable in places. Also, the colors are more accurate.

Similar things with Pole Position and PPII. Seems Mspac can be less predictable in places, too. I think there's other retro games I'm not remembering. Still, I mostly stick with .104 ......though I'm idly thinking about moving up in the next year or so, perhaps. New machine needed for that, of course.

Teeter Torture is an Exidy prototype circa 1982.  It's one of the free, legal roms available from mamedev.org and damn fun!

I'm a little biased since I work on the project, but the new artwork is vastly superior to the old artwork. The new engine allows for higher resolution art and there's now an organized, systematic effort to buy, scan, clean up and preserve game art for use in MAME. Check out the link.

Oh, I forgot to mention Tempest isn't working properly, graphics-wise, though. The star pattern during warp isn't multi-colored, but instead only blue, which is a bummer.
