ultralux or ???
« on: January 19, 2009, 05:04:34 pm »
I'm building an arcade machine based on an xbox, it's gonna have 2 white, 2 red, 2 yellow, 2 blue, 2 green, and 10+ black buttons.  I'd like to have the 8 colored buttons lighted as simply as possible.  The remaining buttons I'm hoping are indistinguishable texture wise from the lighted buttons.

I like the simplicity of ultralux buttons, but the sharp edge, and the lack of an unlighted equivalent is leaving me scratching my head.  Concave or convex I don't really care, but I don't want to pay for 20+ lighted buttons either.

I guess I wasn't perfectly clear the question here is:

Is there a type of buttons that has illuminated, and opaque versions which are otherwise the same?

No.

But you can get the transparent/translucent buttons and then spray a little paint into them. Otherwise, no. There are no opaque versions of the buttons you seek. (Keep in regard that the button manufacturers do not have MAME people in mind, they are making these for actual "arcade" use.) The primary market for clear buttons is in gambling, not streetfighter 2 MAMEing. If you want to be true to the "cause" I would suggest against "clear" buttons. Then again I am not you, so you may feel a need for them.
--- Yes I AM doing this on purpose, and yes I DO realize it is pissing you off.

I just put some ultralux into my bartop, and even unlit I think they look good.  They definately have a different feel that happs though so you have to get use to them.  I went with the clear casing buttons (not chrome) with white inserts, and blue leds.  I know you don't want to purchase 20 of these if your not going to lite them, but like the above poster mentioned, I don't think your going to find exactly what your looking for.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.
