Vista, emulators, bilinear filtering
« on: January 19, 2009, 01:10:58 pm »
Hi!

I just got my first Vista-64 a while ago and installed some old emulators such as FCEU and ZSNES. I noticed that the picture looks like crap and wasn't very smooth. They both ran great on my XP (and still do). I googled for answers and found out that the problem was the lack of bi-linear filtering in Vista (especially in old 2D-games). I just couldn't get the games working as smoothly. So now I'm still using my older computer for emulators.

But I'm getting my first cab now and will be using NES, SNES, Genesis etc along with MAME. It is coming with Vista pre-installed. Do you guys know if the filtering issues have been taken care of somehow? Or should I switch back to XP?

I searched the forums but couldn't find answers regarding this issue.

Thanks in advance.

That option should have nothing to do with the OS. It is a hardware graphics feature that's been around since the mid to late 90's, and can also be done in software. Most likely it's your version of MAME just not supporting it.

Pretty sure I am running ZNES on my cab and it looks good, using Vista 64.

Really? Hmmm, weird. I wonder why the (same) emulators look so much smoother on my XP?

But thanks for the answers guys.

Your not by any chance running both OS-es in different resolutions? XP in 600x800 and Vista in 1280x960 for example?

Check your settings!
For one, you might have your DirectX set to automatically turn on the filtering on one OS but not set this way on the other.
