Keyboard encoder question
« on: June 22, 2003, 11:20:29 pm »
Besides deciding which one to get. I have read that you want the encoder to be a ps2 over usb, is that a bunch of crap or is there really a response time issue. Any emulator i use will be running through windows xp pro or updated version of windows and I would think usb is the way to go. Any ideas?

Unless you're making a "desktop" style control panel you want to hot swap go with the ps/2 connection.

I don't know if there's a response time problem (don't know why there would be), but there was an issue with older USB IPACs, where you couldn't reprogram the buttons on the USB ones, but you could program the PS2 version no problem.  That has been fixed in the newer models.  Best person to ask about the IPAC is Andy Warne (email him thru the site http://www.ultimarc.com

Anyway, if it were up to me, go USB, since that's the most likely to be forward compatible.

Not a response time issue.  I-PAC in USB is limited to either 14 or 16 simultaneous inputs, and unlimited in PS/2, but that shouldn't matter.

I-PAC sometimes has performance issues in USB.  I believe the "fix" was disabling USB Keyboard support in the system BIOS (paradoxically).

I think PS/2 will give better performance, personally.

The reason I ask is because I'm debating between the ipac4 or mk64 encoder. I was doing research on both and on mk64 site it mentioned he didn't use usb (which I thought would be the standard now) because of response issues. My cab is going to have a lot of buttons and joysticks so I want it to be responsive. If you guys think ps2 is the way to go then I'll do that. Any comments?
