HELP! How do you clean laminate!?
« on: June 22, 2003, 04:40:10 pm »
I finally got around to laminating my mame machine yesterday...

I baught black, matt, 8x4 sheets (2 of them) from home depot. The #$@@#$ sales person there used tape (after he rolled the sheets) to hold it together.

Well, the tape he used was absolue crap. BEcause when I pulled the tape off, the plastic part came off, but the sticky stayed behind!

I thought nothing of it, since I always use GooGone to remove sticky residue..

Well, the gooGone worked.. but now there's a "shadow" of where the tape was left behind! Really wierd.. like a 3" wide strip, about 2 feet long down the side!

I tried everything to remove it.. soap & water, alcohol wipes, fantastic, more gooGone... The only thing that works is a white eraser, but it leaves its own uncleanable streaks behind..

HELP!  How do you clean laminate residue that's on the surface/in the tiny cracks.. remember, matt surface.. black.

Thanks.

How about Ajax or Comet cleaner! Oh wait... maybe that's not such a good idea... j/k

Ummm... I would have recommended alcohol.

Honestly I hope you didn't damage the laminate. You can always cover it with some sideart.

I'd suggest calling the shop. I think you're out of luck though I've seen those marks on laminate and I think they are permanent. The guy in the shop is an idiot. Compensation should be sought.

just an idea...try hitting it with some "simple green"...let it soak for about 10-15 minutes before wiping it off. we used the stuff on countertops and floors in the navy to clean things up for inspections, and it worked great..couldn't hurt to try it.

okay sounds funny but this is how I do it.
Rub the areas where you have contact cement with cooking oil.
then wait like 30 min and wipe it off with a damp cloth.
then after that use some soap water to clean the cooking oil and now it should look all nice and clean.
this is how I do it :P

I'm dying to know how you arrived at that conclusion to try that initially snaaaake... =P

What else did you try before you settled on cooking oil?

My grandma has gotten stains out of her table by using crisco the same way.

well I messed up my floor with spray paint once and the owner of the house told me to use cooking oil to get rid of the spots so I figure I try the same for laminate and WORKS !

I spoke to some people at work, and they told me the oil trick works because any oil substance likes to attack / attach to other oil substance..

What about using varsil (spelling?) to remove it? is it safe to use on laminate?

My biggest problem (and I'm sure many of you have it) is that the color I chose is black.. black is a great looking color, but at the same time it shows every finger print, spot & mark..
