Sounds from an arcade - new file
« on: January 06, 2009, 12:05:33 pm »
I need a few different WAV files of coins being dropped into a coin door for a small project I'm working on.  Different coin doors would be awesome (over/under, Williams, Midway).

edit: I have a couple loose coin doors, and a found my mic.  Think I'm okay.

This is a WIP, give it a listen.

edit 2: looking for a place to put the file.  It's not there yet.

I put the file on a torrent tracker.

I've got some ideas to make this better in the future.  One thing I need right now is a pair of microphones and a foam ball the approximate size of a human head.

I know an arcade site that might host it if you want :)

lol.

It's just a WIP, not finished in any capacity at all.    If you want to stick it on the site...well, okay...but I'd like to delete it once it serves it's purpose.

You have piqued my curiousity, what is this small project for?

You have piqued my curiousity, what is this small project for?

A few things.  First, I'm playing with mixing audio.  Second, I'm trying to get my own "arcade ambiance" soundtrack going.  I like the existing ones, but they're a bit TOO busy for my tastes.   Plus there's no actual arcade sounds in there, just the sounds of the games.  No coin drop, no people...

So this was my first experiment, my very first attempt.  I knocked it together in just a few minutes.

There are things I'd change...the Gauntlet sounds, for example, are stereo.  They need to be mono because the sounds are coming from both sides.  If you were in front of the machine, that would be one thing.

I've got one really crazy idea, but it's going to require some specialized equipment that I'll have to fabricate.  I need a couple of mics and some other stuff.

Ahh kinda what I thought. The Ambience soundtracks got me thinking, and if I ever get back into coding again (crosses fingers) I had an idea about such a thing too.

My idea was to have a program that would take multiple sounds (one for each game machine, etc) and have them placed on a "virtual 2d arcade floor". Then, a user who set up this virtual arcade could specify a path that the virtual listener would walk around the floor and at what speed (even allowing for random branching). This would make it more like when you as a kid would walk around the arcade floor (you would hear the closest games the loudest, and hear the games toward your left or right depending on where they were based on where you were facing). I of course would have allowed ambient noise as well. This was to eventually be part of a simple FE I want to make (also assuming I get back into coding), or maybe a module that could be included into MALA or the like. I really do need to get back into coding, I do miss the challenge and creativity that comes with it...
