FOR ALL WHO ARE HAVING TROUBLE CALIBRATING "EMS TOPGUN II"
« on: January 03, 2009, 01:19:29 pm »
Ok, I've been struggling for weeks with my Topgun II's trying to get them to stop jumping around erratically.

I'm not sure what exactly fixed the problem, but here is what I did. I noticed that my mouse cursor was going completely off the right side of the screen, and then it hit me. Since the ArcadeVGA video card has 2 video ports, Windows XP allows you to use both ports for 2 monitors at once. So I am wondering if that might be screwing up the calibration, since technically the edge of the desktop that I had been shooting at, was only "half" of my desktop (sorry if that only makes sense to me). I went into the device manager and disabled the second VGA port, then restarted and the cursor now stays on the screen. Before all this I had also noticed that my monitor was not perfectly centered vertically/horizontally, so I opened up the cap and adjusted that with the knobs for the monitor. I also changed my resolution to 640X240.

I then tried to calibrate the guns and the very first try it worked absolutely PERFECT.

If any of you are having this same problem, please see if any of this helps you and let me know.

I also found that the stereo amplifier I am using, that sits next to my cabinet (for now), interferres with the Topgun signal. I never would have guessed that the amplifier's LCD screen would somehow scatter the signal. I just covered the LCD screen with a piece of cardboard and solved the problem.

So if any of you are having similar issues, make sure that all electronic that send/receive a signal, are covered by a blanket or something.

Also, make sure you don't have a ceiling fan with a light on it in the same room lol.

I know this is an old thread. But I having a hard time getting my topgun III calibrated. I have the four senors placed vertically. No matter what I do the mouse cursor just goes all over the place. I even tried placing the senors horizontally on the screen with no luck. I'm using a CRT TV. I also tried on my Lcd with same result. I know I should have bought an Aimtrack or Act Labs or something. But this was all I could afford at the moment. And depending on the forum I've heard decent stories about the Topguns. Any advice?

Make sure the bars are not inverted in any way.

For example.. if your left bar is on the right side...
or if the top of the bar is on bottom.

I'm not sure how to tell the difference. I was hoping this would come with bars like previous versions. But it came with these (sorry for the crappy pic. There are four of these all together. Would a Wii bar work?  ha ha

Its probably meant to be mounted so that the sensors wires go from the top to the bottom.. so your angled leds may be causing trouble.

Its odd that they took them out of a bar.   You could probably stick them to a set of rulers.

A set of rulers isn't a bad idea. I'll keep trying. In the meantime I just wanted to know if anyone else was having any difficulties calibrating Topgun III on the PC. Not sure about PS2 haven't tried that.

One more thing to consider is the brightness on the screen. I had a real “PITA-day” before I understood that this was causing my problems with the EMS TopGun 2. I.e. that the screen (actually projector big screen) was to intense, so the gun camera couldn’t see the IR LEDs. Like if you stare in to the sun, you won’t see a flashlight next to it ;)
I limited the brightness a bit and it worked properly again.

Now I will probably hack the light bars, and add brighter LED’s. Anyone know for sure what wavelength it is by the way?

One easy way to test, is to just start up the camera in your cell phone, since it will see the IR LED's. Then you can see how bright they are compared to the monitor/screen.

Thanks man! I'll definitely give that a try! In some videos such as this one it shows some sort of calibration program. I'm guessing this is for some Guncon2 game. Because I remember something similar on Resident Evil Dead Aim for PS2 using my Guncon2. Is there anything like this for Windows that would me calibrate the Topgun III?

I also heard rumors about that calibration program, but never found it.
Let me know if you have any success regarding that.
