Question about glass...
« on: January 02, 2009, 11:15:44 am »
Buying glass to cover my monitor is one of the next things on my shopping list. I'm thinking of going with OneDayGlass.com. Anybody have any experience with them? What thickness should I buy? What tint would be best? The Solar Gray they offer doesn't look dark enough. They do offer a #31 Gray that looks pretty dark but it's only offered in a 1/8" thickness. Is 1/8" thick enough for tempered glass?

Not sure about OneDayGlass.com, but I went to a local glass shop.  Should be easy to find in your area.  They made me a replacement for the plexiglass that was in my original cabinet.  I just took it in to them, they measured it and I had a new piece the next day.  Did not have to worry about paying for shipping or damage in shipping.

I got some 1/8" thick tinted glass and it worked perfect.  I thought it made the cabinet look better as well as the image from the monitor.  Make sure you go with GRAY tint.  The tint hid a lot but I still made a bezel as I wanted everything hidden.  The darker will hide more, but you may have a problem if you plan to use a light gun.

I got my glass from them, and am very satisfied; solar grey 1/8". The tint is just right; it improves the contrast of the monitor and gives a nice, clean look to the cab.
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

I thought about the solar gray but was worried it was a little too light. You wouldn't have to have any pictures of how it looks would you?

I would think 1/8th is very thin. Would rather have 1/5 or 1/4th.

I went for grey tinted 6mm (just under a 1/4 inch) thick, and I wouldn't advise going thinner than that.  I also went for toughened safety glass, as I'll have kids playing on the cab in a few years :)

Very happy with how it turned out!

I used 1/4 inch tempered glass on my cab and went with the grey option as well, you can still see my bezel underneath though.
I'll post some pics later.

Thanks. Looking forward to seeing your pics.

I'd probably end up painting the unused areas of the glass black to hide anything I don't want seen.
