X-Arcade Dual Joystick and driving games? MAME
« on: December 26, 2008, 11:46:43 am »
I have the X-Arcade Dual Joystick, and I can play fighting games (SF, TMNT, MK) just fine.  When I try AfterBurner, OutRun, SuperHang-On, I can't get left-right steering.  I can get throttle, brake, etc etc, but no steering.

Any ideas?

These games didn't use 8 way sticks.  You will have to map those left-right functions to the stick.  It won't work quite right, but it's the best you can do short of buying new hardware.

Thanks for the reply.  I think I have it solved.  I re-mapped my X-Arcade joystick to work with the arrow keys, not the 8-UP, 4Left, 6Right, 2Down keys.  Now it seems to work fine.

Most of those games used analog controls and cannot be properly played with a digital joystick.

The easiest solution is to buy a PC analog joystick or buy a PS2 to USB converter and use a dual shock or racing wheel.

How well do u360's work with racing games?  It always seemed weird to me the idea of driving with that joystick.

I was mainly referring to the three games he asked about. Afterburner and Hang-on are great with the U360. Outrun needs a wheel or at least a spinner, but if you don't have one of those, an analog stick like the U360 is better than a switch-based stick.
