Moving Tips
« on: December 24, 2008, 11:41:36 am »
My cab will finally be here on Monday! I am very excited about this but will be more so when it is safely brought into my home which includes a trip down a flight of stairs.  Can anyone provide some tips for moving this beast? It is coming with the monitor and speakers pre-installed, how heavy can I expect it to weight would you guys think? I can get a couple of friends to move it, I just want to make sure I handle is properly.

Thanks.

The more friends, the better. I hope your stairway is wide too. No matter how you do it, it is gonna be difficult.

As for weight, probably about 350 lbs if built with MDF.

Yeah... That is the number I just heard from Scott at Mameroom, 350lbs. =/
He said to handle it from the sides and not the top and the bottom.

These are cellar doors that have had WS TVs, Fridges, Deep Freezers, Washers etc. move in and out from so I am hoping I can handle this.

The shape of this and tipping it back is what bothers me most.

I always take the monitor out and, if convenient, I take off the control panel when going down stairs. If you atleast take out that monitor, that will take 50-75 lbs off the weight of the cab. Every little bit helps!

CP will be off so that is not an issue, the monitor will remain installed but I see your point.

Not sure how you will "handle it from the sides" when going down the stairs unless those are some oftly wide stairs.  You will almost certainly have to tip it back and have one guy at the top and one at the bottom, maybe two and two if you can manage.

They may have meant something like using a hand truck (dolly) from the sides and tipping it that way.

Just remember the guy on the bottom needs to be ready to take the brunt of the weight.
And take it ONE step it at a time.

Rent a hand truck. One made for a fridge.
It has belts and rollers along the back.
strap arcade to hand truck. Tip cab back to your waist level.
let rollers guide you down the stairs.
I hit 220 pounds. I can hold back the cabs my self.
If you a  smaller person get help with it.
to get this one in my house I had to remove 2 doors and even the door jams.
I just left the door jams off and re drywalled in a frame.
this one is a BEAST to move.

I used a regular hand truck one friend and some nylon ratchet straps to move my Tron and a DK cabs what a difference MDF makes I think the tron was twice as heavy as the Donkey Kong made from plywood

yeah and just go slow and one step at a time just like Kevin said

it's not too bad

good luck!

I am going to borrow a hand truck from work but it's just a regular one I'm afraid. I got 5 guys who are going to be there, more than needed at this point. I mean I don't even think it is possible to have 5 sets of hands on it!

I figure 2 to lift and 1 to balance.

Good news is I just found out we have one of those fridge hand trucks here at work.

I have not.
I would only try it with my 7 yr older brother or my 7 yr younger brother.
I can move allmost anything with the right dolly myself.
I have asked for help with a very old Xerox machine.
I moved to 3rd floor. older brother broke a rib but never let go of Xerox
( I published a Atari  8 bit news letter at the time N.W.A.P.C)
I broke a rib moving My moms organ by my self.
I have now learned to only trust appliance dolly's for large items.
legs to long for the dolly? add 4x4 under the legs and add length to strap.
have help to lift up stairs, or have help to hold me back as going down stairs. going down I have some one  help hold dolly beside me or behind me. Never in front of me. and I use some one I can trust that will do anything to grab hold and save a life.
In the position the people are in the picture. I do not see that as a safe way to move a full weighted cab!

I would like to have a set .
My wife could help bring in Dry wall, MDF, all kinds of stuff. Large Long Bulky stuff.
small foot print and heavy NO!
her tummy could not do it.
not sure I could eather.
I see it as the longer the item the better the lift with those straps.
I could be wrong but I will wait to be proving wrong
