Touchscreen Kits - Any good?
« on: December 23, 2008, 03:27:17 pm »
I see a lot of these kits on eBay that turn your LCD into a touchscreen. Do they work? Do they look terrible? Most of them are not much cheaper than an actual touchscreen monitor, but I have a few monitors lying around so I'm thinking this could work for me. Anyone have experience with these things?

In all reality all any touchscreen monitor is is a monitor with a "kit" on it.
The "touchscreen" part is just an add-on.

Stick with brands like 3M Microtouch or similar and you should be fine.
Just be sure to measure properly and note the difference between curved, flat, etc.

I've bought a couple of the 19" touchscreen add ons from ebay and I was very happy with their performance.

Can you tell that they're add ons? Or do they look just like a standard monitor when all is said and done.

Well, they are about a 1/16" of an inch thick, so it depends on whether you can the monitor back in its original case with that on the front.  Only on the edges could you tell it's not a regular monitor.

You may want to use some sort of spacers when putting the front back on if possible.
You do not want to crush or put stress on the outer edge of the touchscreen by "clamping" the faceplate down to much on it.

I'd be interested in seeing a link from ebay to know what type of kit you are referring to.  Thanks in advance
