California Speed, ? to "seasoned" dedicated collectors
« on: December 22, 2008, 07:57:06 pm »
So after my Cruis'n deal went belly up a few weeks ago I located a California Speed instead (does someone really want a racer or what?)

The guy says the chip for manual transmission is missing so only the automatic works.

Huh?

Is that possible, is there really like some rom chip that pops in & out like the game/sound roms in a pinball machine?

Any insight or wisdom would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Is he an Op or just some guy? I've heard many people say "chip" instead of "board". Maybe the interface that the shifter uses is missing.

Dunno about a chip being missing (maybe the guy doesn't know exactly what is wrong, or maybe he does.) Anywho, I did as much digging as I can think of and came up nearly empty handed, except that vaps has a list of people who have the cab themselves, you might do better asking them.

^^ link for klov users who have the game in question.

He's just some guy but sometimes ops pretend to be dumb when they know the issue is a real doozie.

Like the guys on ebay that say "only selling because I need the room" & there are like 15 machines in the background fresh from a dusty crate with Russian text all over it................Yeah right, sure.... its something simple to fix it, right.

Anyway thanks for the ideas guys, man is it freaking HARD to find a racer in good condition that works  :banghead:

Everything is a converted cab with torn artwork, missing Formica, burnt monitors & MIA chips.

Not much more help, but mame and system16 say the game has an extra "widget board", that handles ethernet and analog to digital conversion.  If the shifter is like harddrivn' full size sit down, and uses an analog shifter, I can see something wrong with the board making shifting bad.

However, I know that board handles the pedals and steering, so ...  Add that mame has the gear shift as four switches in jamma player 2 buttons 1-4 (though mame might be missing emulating analog shift?, like it's missing the 49-way joystick emulation in blitz/gauntlet games).

...Oh, just found this in mame's notes (MAWS):
"There are 2 types of California Speed, one of which does not utilise the 4 position shift lever. This was the factory kit that converted "Hyperdrive" to California Speed."

Maybe he has the no manual shift version. :(

Some more search, and found something that might be good news (if the seller doesn't have the manual or hasn't read it).

The manual at www.tamdb.net says the switches for the gear shift needs to be wired Normally Closed, and all other switches arethe normal Normally Open.  Maybe the switches are just not wired correctly?
Still, it could be the no-manual shift version. :dunno
