Vista 64 light guns or wii remote.. need help
« on: December 18, 2008, 12:19:41 pm »
After searching around I'm not positive on what I can get to work.  I just built a new pc and cabnet and I'm putting everything together as we speak.  I read about all the plus sides of going with vista 64 so I built a new comp with all the bells and whistles and overclocked it to over 4Hz just to realize I cant use light guns.  My machine will be a fighter and shooter mostly so having a gun is a must.  I have a copy of xp but after spending all the money on a higher end pc I really wanted the extra boost from vista 64.  I've been reading alot about wii remotes but I haven't seen a thread where someone states they got it to work really well.  Although all the searches I run come across older threads, so I'm not sure if there has been any progress in this area.  Also since its going in a cab it needs to load automatically and be ready to go as soon as the front loader loads.  Having to go in and activate it each time wouldn't work out very well.
So my question is.. Does anyone have any info that could help me out?  Either a light gun that I can get to work or how to get the wii remote to work or even any other ideas?  Then again should I just go with xp till something else is released?

thanks

64bit MAME running on Vista 64bit will see a 20% average gain in preformance over 32bit MAME on 32bit XP accross the board.  Yes you will see a similar gains running 64bit MAME on 64bit XP Pro , But 64bit XP Pro cost more than 64bit Vista and is because of 64  XP's  tiny install base isn't well supported, where as Vista 64bit install are on the rise and the support is very good these day.

See my benchmark thread for more details.

I'd like to say you will see similar gains with 64bit Linux and 64bit SDLMAME, but all my attempts to date benchmarking on linux have been disapointing in their results, I'll try again next week while the brother in law is here for Christmas, he's the Linux nut in the family so he should be able to point where I might be going wrong.

Taz (or anyone else), do you have any ideas about a gun for vista 64?  The xp I have is not 64bit so I can switch os's if I have to but as stated before I would prefer not to.  I'm mainly just looking for a solution to vista 64.

To my knowledge the WiiMote hack is the only solution that appears to work in 64bit vista, but there are a lot of conficting veiws about how well it works in MAME.

The problem is 64bit Vista requires signed drivers, getting drivers digitally signed by Microsoft is not cheap, and in the already small market for PC lightguns there aren't enough people running 64bit Vista yet for the manufactures to justify the cost.

But really...

VISTA is slower for older games.  The OS takes a lot more resources by default...

BUT...

64 bit apps do make a decent jump in speed on newer games.  And the slower games should be running 100% on any machine you would ever consider putting VISTA on.

Plus, if you have a dual processor, VISTA will take space on the 'other' processor.

lilwolf, you really need to try vista and see how it runs,

I'm sitting here with a totally un-optimized install of Vista 64bit Ultimate (in fact I plan on reinstall it in the next week), I have AVG installed as my antivirus but very little easy extra running in the background, I currently have half a dozen internet explorer windows open and messanger running in the background and while almost a 1GB of RAM is in use and there are 45 Processes and no less than 720 thread running, and i'm lucky to see the processor hit 1% on both cores at the same time.

Most of the B.S. on the web about how slow Vista is, is either written by people who are lucky if they've used it for more than 10 mins total spread over a half a dozen trips to the local department store, or reveiwed it two days after it's releases with pre beta drivers installed for half the hardware. Does Vista use too much hard drive space yes (64 bit ultimate, Hell Yes) does it use more ram than XP yes, is it slower in the real world NO, not unless your running it on an out of date piece of rubish that has a date with a dust bin in it's near future. (just as XP is slow if you run it on a system than came with Win95)

I've been running Vista 64bit in dual boot with XP Pro for the last year now on my system, as far as I can tell Vista is as fast if not faster than XP in day to day use in my experiance.

People ---smurfette--- about the DRM in Vista, well that only effects you if your dumb enough to pay 30-50% more for DRM effected Blu Ray movies in the first place, otherwise it's doesn't have any effect on what you can an can't watch or do on your PC. The god almighty Apple OSX has a 1Gb RAM minimum, 2GB or more recommended, just like is recommend for Vista, XP doesn't run well on anything less than 1gb post SP2 and more so post SP3. The UAC is pain in the butt some times, but is no where near as much since Sp1, and even Pre SP1 it was ten times less annoying than the default secuity is Linux .

Vista is anything but perfect, for a start Microsoft listen too many Apple and Linux fan boys during it's developement as can be seen from the default vista desktop. But the simple fact is most people just give Vista crap because it the newest Microsoft OS on the block, it was the same with XP for the first 18months to 2 years of it's life, and then it was suddenly the greatest thing since sliced bread, and then Vista comes alone and XP is suddenly prefect. I hate Office with a passion, but I see Windows for what it is, the only full standardise, universally flexable, universally supported OS on the market, Linux has 3 standards for everything so you never know if anything is going to work or not, OSX has one standard but it will only run on a half dozen hardware configurations.

If Vista is slower show me, on a modern system with real useage not sum half baked synthetic benchmark or game than runs in Directx9 in XP and Directx10 in Vista.

Ok that turn into a total rant, but I sick of hearing Vista this, Vista that everwhere, some people would blame Vista for the war in Iraq is they could, it just getting old.

Apples to oranges.  You're comparing a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS.

Taz
The pc I just built for my cab is this..
Gigabyte gv-rx24t256h
Intel core 2 duo E8500
4gb G Skill PC2 8000 ram  5-5-5-15
OCX 500w p.s.
GIGABYTE GV-RX24T256H Radeon HD 2400XT 256MB video card .. cheap card
And all the other random stuff to make it work.

Ive done a very basic overclock with stock voltages and hit a little over 4ghz with no problems.  Everything seems fast and smooth.  Where as my laptop which is a little athlon 64 dual core with 2.5 gb's ram came and with vista is much slower and ive had older pc's run faster with xp.  Obviously there is a huge hardware difference between the 2 but this is an issue with many store bought pc's these days.  Most of them just arent powerful enough to run vista well.  I work for an isp and I see this on a daily basis.

Im still a little new to the mame world though so I needed some advice on how which route to go.  My machine is mainly for games like killer instict, marvel vs capcom, tekken, virtual fighters, and so on.  Although, it is really pretty important to be able to play the shooters as well. Newer games are the way Im going and obviously based on your benchmarking vista will perform better, but will I see and feel the difference playing these games on xp 32.  As it sits I feel this may be my only realistic option.  Kinda sucks though since I had vista 64 in mind.  I thought about dual booting but I dont know how well that works if I boot into a front loader.  I dont want it complicated for a random player so the wii remotes may be out of the question.

I completely agree with Taz.  I also use Vista 64 and it's so much faster than XP running on this same system it isn't even funny, ESPECIALLY with MAME.  People just give Vista a bad rap because it's the fashionable and safe thing to say.

Having said that, I'm hearing very good things about Windows 7 and it's new microkernel that will make Vista look like a bloated hog as far as hard drive space and resource utilization goes.  But that's all speculation and rumor; we'll see when it's actually released.
