Help with (safely) connecting coin door lights to a PC
« on: December 16, 2008, 06:19:49 pm »
I've been putting this off for a while, but finally have some free time today to finish up one of the last pieces of my cab.  I was looking at some instructions online, and found this site (http://www.arcadecab.com/Projects/Coindoor.htm) and this site (http://joelsgadgets.com/CoindoorPage2.HTML).  They each use molex connectors (which I have), and some standard wire to connect the lights to the PC power supply.

One says to splice in the wire with the wires in the molex adapter, but I'm not entirely sure how.  The wire in the molex is fairly tightly in place, and I can't fit the copper wire inside.  The other says to cut off the extra molex plug on a Y cable (which I have), and use the same wires to power the lights, but they also include some odd instructions involving a pci card, a headphone jack, and more than likely solder.  Can anyone help clarify the easiest way to go about doing this, preferably with out setting fire to my cabinet?

In the example where he uses a molex connector from an old PC fan, you would just cut and strip the two appropriate wires from that molex and connect them to your wires that lead to the lights.  Simple twist + electrical tape should do.  Then connect that to one of the open molex sockets from your PC power supply.  Oh and be sure to do all of this with the PC turned off just in case you short the wires.

Excellent.  Thank you.

I just found this while looking for something else. It looks like it would be an easy way to connect it if you didn't want to just hang a molex plug out of your case.

That said, I just have mine hanging out of the case  :P

[This] video tutorial for LED coin door lighting may help you. Just wire in your LEDs instead of the bulb holder(s).

Don't twist and tape, thats just asking for it to come off and short.

Get some crimp terminals at a minimum since thats at least reliable, or else solder and then heatshrink.
