looking for free/cheap computer and/or parts
« on: June 19, 2003, 09:46:50 pm »
I'm doing some work for my church youth group.  We're looking for a computer for the youth group.  We need something probably 400 mhz or more and/or any parts anyone would be willing to donate or sell for cheap.  I thought I'd check with you guys as we seem to have a pretty honest group around here.

P.S. Please don't turn this into a religious discussion, I've had enough of that.

religious stuff is all good, to each his own =)
ummm...
hmmz
i was thinking tho, depending on how much money everyone has
maybe everyone could chip in ten bucks or something depending upon how many people are in it
you can get 400 mhz for around 100 or 200 dollars now pretty easy... 200 would be expensive tho, i'd say maybe 125...
just an idea...
might be easier to get money or even donations rather than free computer parts, i dunno...
just a suggestion...
good luck!

that's not a half bad idea on gathering money, i'll talk to some folks about it.  i'll see what i can find out.  I've found some barebones systems for around 100 bucks, and that's definitely a large option right now.  We're also checking around at some other churches to see if they've replaced any old computers that we could have.

Check charitable thrift shops like Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, etc. They're pretty good-natured people and would likely give you a discount on an item you buy for a church on top of their already low prices. Plus that's the kind of place where you'll find a 400MHz machine being as old as it is.

I actually have a machine I could GIVE you, but I don't know what shipping would be for it. It would kind of suck for me to have to pay money to give you a free computer. See the problem??? In fact, it was the computer I was using in my own MAME machine before I started my recent upgrade. It needs a new (pci) video card, though. I pulled the old one out. It still has onboard video, but it doesn't support all the proper resolutions for the games (especially vertical games like Galaga).

I'll be happy to help where I can. I don't know if you're handy or not, but I might be able to have parts drop shipped to your location.

you should try contacting large businesses/government agencies about possibly donating computers to your church...  i know that the chevron facility near where a live donates pc's as well as allows summer internships for students at one of the local high schools...
