HELP! LCD Topgun New Owner here!
« on: December 10, 2008, 09:42:31 am »
It's been a good few months since I've logged on here due to heavy Uni workloads... well, anyway, already feel out of touch!

Picked up a LCD Topgun and have just started to try and get it to work! I first plugged them in, extracted the newest drivers off the EMS website, then installed them via the 'auto-detect' facility in Windows XP. Then I held the A and B buttons in for 5 seconds - shot each corner and then the middle of the screen, rebooted and the mouse didn't move with the gun - so tried calibration again, A and B, etc, etc... still no luck! ::)

I know theres lots of guides out there but I really can't find one that gives me a step-to-step guide of how to get them to work... I know I have to get the mouse to function with the gun in Windows before I can get anyway but I'll be honest with you, I'm lost as to what I'm doing... ???

Any help would be gratefully received! :)

Well, I installed the EMS driver first and the sensors followed the gun - however, nothing much else happened. Then I installed Smog's and the buttons seem to work but still no luck in moving the cursor.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help so far...

Right, still got no where with this and its really starting to annoy me - I think the problem lies in that I can't get rid of the f-ing EMS driver - Whenever I try and get rid of the HID mouse device, it will not let me uninstall it... really, really annoying... Perhaps if I could get rid of this then I could start the install process from scratch and just install Smog's driver... I also have Gun2Mouse running as well and haven't got a clue as to get rid of that either... someone please HELP before I throw this gun at a wall...

Ooookay... now we're getting somewhere - I have installed all the drivers (as far as I'm aware) so now to do a fresh install... I'll report back...

When I try and install the driver it still calls it 'EMS Topgun' and it will have half install then fail because it requires hidtopgun.dll (or something like that) and it can't find it!? Any suggestions? :banghead:

I have now managed to install Smog's driver. I can get most of the buttons to show signs of life but still no luck getting the cursor to move with the movement of the gun.  :dunno

Also, on occasions, tinkering with the gun makes the cursor go either crazy or stick in the bottom left hand corner...

I just installed the latest EMS drivers and restarted.  Then I went through the hardware calibration tutorial in the Wiki.  I had to repeat the calibration about 7 times to get it reasonably accurate.  Just played Area-51 with no problems except reloading by shooting off screen is hit or miss.  I know I read somewhere that can be fixed... off to search.

Good luck.  BTW mine is an original TopGun.

Topgun support is an utter mess... the EMS website is as clear as muddy ditch water and about as useful!

I can TopGun driver + panel v.1.0 beta 2 to function the buttons but no mouse cursor movement with the gun and once I enter hardware calibration I can't get out and there seems to be no signs of life other than the LED shining when I aim the gun at them!

I'm under the presumption that Gun2Mouse V.3.2 has an even newer driver!? Well, if I'm honest, I'm not even 100% sure what this does...(what DOES it do?) I can't install it as a driver anyway as it keep reporting there was an error in the installation... handy!!

Smog's drivers have exactly the same problem as TopGun driver + panel v.1.0 beta 2 in that it picks up the button presses but no movement of the cursor and you can't exit hardware calibration just the LEDs shine when you aim at them...

What the hell am I doing wrong!? Or are these just badly made guns? I don't understand why the button presses work but the cursor never ever moves whatever i try...

Piece of  :censored:!

Let me online what I have done just to make sure I've got this all correct...

Horizontal set up (a vertical one won't fit) - Power LED in bottom right hand corner of screen and wires hang from both strips to the left...

LEDs plug into gun... gun plugged into USB... gun recoil plug into Y cable which is plugged into other USB...

New hardware detected... install TopGun driver + panel v.1.0 beta 2 - picks up EMS LCD Topgun... install... then picks up HID mouse... install... then picks up HID device... install...

Restart computer...

no signs of life...

go into control panel... buttons function but mouse cursor doesn't move with gun only PS/2 mouse...

Point gun away from screen... press A and B together... Laser dot shows... point at Top right LED, shoot, then centre, shoot, then top left, shoot, then top right, shoot, then bottom right, shoot, then bottom left, shoot... nothing happens... laser dot still shows and now the buttons don't do anything when you press them... awesome!

Is there something I'm doing incorrectly here!? :banghead:

I have been reading the wiki

http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/LCDTopGun#Hardware_calibration

I do not understand the

Software Calibration
It has been noticed that many different computer/driver combos have calibrated to the same numbers!
X Min = 160
X Max = 672
Y Min = 32
Y Max = 224

were do I put in these numbers?
I am working with Mame 32 v0.078

oh I missed this part.
EMS driver 3.1 does not appear to need software calibration
sorry
