Groovy Game Gear 49-Way
« on: December 08, 2008, 10:34:35 pm »
I want to put together a setup with a 49-Way joystick. I went to groovy game gear since they seem to have everything... on their Happ 49-Way I found this message:

"GroovyGameGear.com will soon offer it's own 49-way unit. It will be based on the opto-mechanics of the HAPP/Midway sticks, but with a number of custom parts designed specifically for the home arcade enthusiast and GP-Wiz49 interface. Did we mention it will also have a ball top?"

This has been there for many months with no updates. I have tried to contact the company via their web forms but I have received not response. I am not sure if their forms are broken or if they are ignoring me or what. I heard the owner hangs out here so I thought I would see if he or anyone else has any info on this product like if/when it will happen (heh happ-en) or if I should order a happ from somewhere else.

thanks

Ultimarc's UltraStik360 (aka "U360"), baby - it can act as a 49 way and so much more:

Balltop or bat top and customizable for throw and feel.

You can even mod it to a Happ flight stick:

I am a very happy U360 user and recommend it highly.

Eric.

I waited for quite a while for the updated interface, then gave up. He is putting out a lot of other products, so I think it shows a lack of interest in this particular product. If he wouldn't have mentioned the new version, I probably would have bought the old one a long time ago. Now I will end up finding a solution from another vendor.

I actually have a fair quantity of these GGG modified units made and sitting on the shelf.  I was waiting to offer them when / if the newer version of the interface was released, however that interface has taken a back seat to a number of other projects.  I'm afraid my answer to any emails asking when the newer GPWiz49 version would be available would simply be "I don't know".

If anyone is interested in a good 49-way balltop with a replacement stainless shaft (got some nice colored tops coming soon as well), that works great with the current GP-Wiz49 interface, then they should shoot me an email stating so.  They aren't cheap sticks, but nothing feels like a good rubber grommet stick.  I personally will use nothing else.

What will the new GPWiz49 offer, just more outputs?

No, but I can't talk about any of the innovative features.  History has shown that they would just end up on a competing product and I can't facilitate that for obvious reasons.

I'll look at the situation again soon to see what can be done.  If nothing more, I'll consider an interim 1.5 version that will at least let one put 2 sticks on the same interface to take advantage of the extra inputs and get the user cost down some.
