mame xml file driving me nuts

im trying to use a list.xml file for romlister,

setup is mala and mame32ui.

i see a full list on mala ok but listxml.xml is 0 bytes.
mame.xml is 30 meg.

romlister says error opening file, i tryed renaming mame.xml to listxmwl,xml, but error opening that file to.

ive went into mala to get xml from the exe but it doesnt create one over 0 bytes.

what am i going wrong

I'd go from the commandline: "mameui32 -lx > listxml.xml" from the mameUI folder.
