Not trying to be mean, but my motto is "if I can't afford it then I don't need it."

Instead of begging for money try saving a little every month until you have enough.

if you're in the military...you have enough money... if you can't afford a monitor, how did you(will you?) afford the rest...just play it on a keyboard until you can afford it.

military folk get paid housing & food allowances...that's two huge costs right there that automatically get taken out of the equation of life...

i guess that's one way to deal with an economic recession...start asking others for money... :dizzy:

I bought a 22" CRT for $20 on craigs list.

Maybe you should go that route until you can get more $$?   :dunno

I completely agree that this is no way to get a Mame Machine going - by asking others for the money for it.  That said, cool it with the "Military gets paid a lot" stuff.  The allowances you spoke of, are not "extra" and do not take care of all of the costs associated with housing and food...

Just because someone is in the military, does not mean they have money... This is particularly true if the member is a junior personnel.

For  Ortizimo:  A Mame cabinet is a definite want, and not a need.  It is irresponsible, unethical, and illegal, for members of the military to "beg" for money.

 :laugh2:

If I told you what I came from & where I am now you would...........eh forget it, let me be constructive.

My first arcade was built from an empty asteroids cab, x-arcade joy/buttons, a keywhiz, betson track & a 24' tv from walmart with a paper marquee from Custom Arcade Graphics (showing my tenure there as now we all go to mamemarquees:-).

If you get your TV from craigslist or a local ebay listing as another member suggested, find a cheap pc online as well & a $7 TV out graphic card you can build a machine for about the same price of that monitor.......lest you forget shipping on that CRT & the graphic card to get it to work.

Hopefully that helps man.

I built my first machine for 200.

15 - gutted xenophobe cabinet with water damage
120 - xarcade
Free - collected pc parts from work (friends and family works)
20 - 19" VGA monitor
40 - 50 in vinyl and paint

Spend time not money. See if you can find a recycled computer store around you.
My next machine ended up taking me 2 years to finish, and I did for around 800, but I took my time.

Ok, guys listen...I DON'T GET PAID A LOT OF MONEY LIKE ALL YOU THINK...and its not illegal or unethical to ask for money for something like this...now if I was asking for money to use it towards something military then yes...so now that you have been schooled all I'm asking is for a single freaking dollar nothing more...stop judging me i am not doing anything wrong here...and yes we get all those nice allowance paid for us like housing and such BUT they get taken out of the pay I don't see anything else. Besides we're all affected in this economy issue icluding us (military) folks.  Didnt know that because I have a particular job I couldn't count ask for help. Shessh!!! :badmood:

Forget i even ask..someone lock this thread.

I'm not in the military.  I have three kids and only a tiny bit of income for this hobby.

I got my money from selling stuff that I didn't need, building stuff custom from junk, and returning cans and bottles.  Seriously.

Eventually I got enough cash from that to buy parts plus some extra, selling those extra parts to help pay for the parts I wanted to keep.

I also kept my eyes out for free arcade swag.  My first cab cost me a whopping $0.  Yes, $0.  Computer I found on the street, old cab that was being tossed, old parts.

Eventually I had enough cash to build a couple decent cabs from actual cabs, an old Galaxian that was gutted and a POS Dynamo.

My point is this: it is quite possible to do a lot with very little.   Begging for money to fund your hobby is demeaning.  If you were asking for food or whatever, that would be one thing.  Of course it's not illegal, but it doesn't paint you in a very favorable light.
