You may want to read through this topic on the Maximus Arcade forums about hiding Windows.  It was very helpful for me.  I didn't do the "shell" part, but I did grab the tips that showed how to hide windows and replace images, etc.

Find out how here:
http://www.maximusarcade.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=506

As for the 1942 problem, it sounds like you accidentally set the "throttle control" to the up joystick direction.  You can reset it in the tab menu in MAME.

Hit TAB --- input (general) --- user interface --- throttle.  It should be set to F10 by default.  Yours may be set to "up".

To reset it, hit the enter key on the throttle option, then hit F10 to change it back to the original default of F10.

If you mess up, you can simply hit enter and then the esc button to erase what's in there.  Then hit enter again and the button you want to use.

Hope this helped.

I haven't tried it yet, but I have the idea that instant sheller is easier and better. Could try that out.
