WTB: New/Used 1/16" Slotting Bit
« on: June 18, 2003, 06:12:16 pm »
Allright this is basically a beg/plea.  :-[ I live in Canada and between the 16 dollar "brokerage fees" that UPS rips us off with, the 20 dollar shipping on 1 ounce items, the exchange rate and so on it is becoming an imposibility to find a bit for less then 50-60 dollars canadian.  Not to mention the fact that I cannot find a bit smaller then 5/32" ANYWHERE in this router forsaken country.  My plea is this.  Anyone who is done with their bit (1/2" or 1/4" collet) OR could get me one for a fair price (I have seen them for 12-18 US) then ship it for a fair price I would be forever gratefull.  I could even trade for the bit (I have several Duron CPU's  700,750 and a T-Bird 800).  Thank you!

(PS all prices I listed are in canadian funds)

I've never been to Canada so I wouldn't know, but... don't you have large chain hardware stores? I bought mine just a couple days ago at Sears. Surely you have that. Otherwise there's Lowe's, Home Depot, Builder's Square (if they're still in business).

Believe me I have looked everywhere.  All I get is blank stares.  I did come across a 5/32" Slotting bit, although I am wary of it being much too large for the job.  I don't really want to hot glue gun the molding in.

Oooohhh this is for the t-molding? Hmmm... yeah that would be too wide for sure. Don't know what to tell you other than good luck.  :-\ I can't help you out there.

Try using a dremel with the carbide cutting disk. That plus the screw-on standoff for getting accurate depth. That's what I used.

Have you tried www.canstick.com? He's situated in Canada.

PacManFan, how well did that work? How difficult was it? I'll do that if it works well. I saw those things at Home Depot and almost got them just for the t-molding. I'm feeling cheap this week.

I won't lie to you, It wasn't too easy.
The biggest problem was speed, After you get the cutter aligned to the center of the board (Use a test board), The cutting speed was kind of slow -> 1 foot /min or so. And it definately cut better against the rotation than with it.
Good luck

Well let's add in a "what if"...

What if I used my own spiral saw (super heavy duty Dremel thinger) with a router attachment and that bit? Are the discs pretty sturdy? Did you have to use more than 1?

I don't mind going slow. This whole thing has been slow, anyways.

I only had to use 1 disk, I'm talking about the steel carbide cutting disk(~12$US), not the cut-off or sanding disks. I think you'll be ok with a spiral saw, as long as you have a proper standoff to get the right depth.

Ohhh... I thought you meant the fiberglass reinforced disks. So what did I do? I went out and bought them and tried it out. They're CRAP!  :P

That and the plunge on my plunge router is busted. Looks like I'll be making a trip to Sears tomorrow... CRAP CRAP CRAP!!! I can't afford problems! I've already cut back my food budget to buy parts.

(That reminds me. I haven't eaten in like 10 hours...)
