Racing game recommendations?(non-3D)
« on: November 20, 2008, 01:33:56 pm »
Hey all!

I'm almost done with my stand-up driving cab, and at this point I have
Chase HQ, Out Run, Pole Position II and SCI on it. But before I put the
lid on it, I wanted to ask if anybody had any last-minute additions that
I should consider?
(have to be MAME)

Thanks!

Nicholas

Would Spy Hunter count?

(I'm assuming you have a 270 wheel.)

edit: meant to also mention gtmr and gtmr2.  Not my type, but a decent following.

Any PC wheel.  They are all 270 wheel, like most behind the wheel driving arcade games (and all current ones).  Well, a good quality PC wheel.

360 wheels (aka spinner wheels) are better for top down view track games (Sprint/Super Sprint, Ironman Ivan Stewart's Super Off-Road, Destruction Derby) and old driving games (Pole Position).

Can you play PPII with a 270?  If it's a 360 there are plenty more I can recommend...

PPII with a 270 is as bad as with a 2-way joystick.  Because it is a 360 wheel.  TB or spinner are way better.

Yes.  Different feel, of course, but almost as satisfying, IMO. :)  edit: some games are easier to remember "TB is a spinner" than others.  For example, some are harder to spin TB right when the car is going down on the screen and coming to a right hand turn (to the left of the current track segment on the screen).  I have no problem with off road, but super sprint sometimes I go the wrong way.

I can't remember which one, but either Thrash Rally or Neo Driftout on the NeoGeo (also arcade) was a lot of fun, try them out.
