Rare Robotron bug?
« on: November 20, 2008, 01:08:28 am »
Maybe, maybe not, but I sure haven't heard of this, let alone seen it before. I just flew right through a spheroid! I just sort of accidentally moved a certain way, after a button-hook, and the spheroid sorta did the same, and I flew right through it - or we passed through each other, perhaps - very similar to going through a ghost in Pac-man or Mspac. Fortunately, I was smooth enough to go with it and carry on, but still it was quite astounding.

I have seen a few different things like this happen in Robotron, usually when there are a lot of objects on the screen.  One of the most common is for the cruise missiles that the brains shoot to go right through you rather than killing you.  It usually surprises me to the point where I just get killed by the next thing that comes along!

I have noticed that most when running right up against the walls and the quark or spheroid are at there smallest (as they expand and contract). I've seen the cruise missiles look like they go through you once in a blue moon. I believe the objects are actually brushing up to you, pixel perfectly, just outside your bounding edge. I don't think the collision detection is failing. It just appears to do so due to the fast paced nature of the game.

I've seen things like this happen before in Robotron, Ms. Pacman and also in Zookeeper.  I guess 8-bit gaming isn't perfect.  To me, that's what adds to the element of greatness to these games.  A certain quirkiness is always fun.

You can also run through the hurdles in Track n Field sometimes, with no detriment to speed. Unfortunately, I can't do it on demad and certainly nothing like every hurdle in the event.

Sorry for jacking the thread...

Na, that's an interesting one.

Yeah, I have generally eaten it in Pac/mspac when it's happened.

Smiley: this was different. Though I was heading toward the right wall - in the lower-right corner - I was a couple inches away when it happened. As well, the spheroid wasn't contracted/contracting that I remember. In fact, it wasn't like pac/mspac where you go through the ghost, thereby being masked by it briefly, but appeared as if the dude and the spheroid were in the same space and both translucent. It was really neat. That's what I remember, anyway. Maybe the speed of it all made it seem so.
