Windows Boot Problem
« on: November 18, 2008, 10:59:27 pm »
I just installed a video card capable of using component cables as an output.  After some initial trouble getting my TV to interpret the signal correctly (there was actually an option in the menu to turn the component input on), it worked fine (and looked great!)...until I shut down the computer.  Now, whenever I start up the computer, it goes through the normal boot process, goes through the windows boot up screen, and then just blacks out the monitor which goes into power save mode.  I tried using a VGA monitor, but it does the same thing.  If I boot using VGA mode or Safe Mode, it works fine, but as soon as I try going back to a normal boot, it blacks out both monitors.  Can anyone help me?

Anyone? I really need help troubleshooting and fixing this.  I can't use my cab (or my PC, for that matter) until I get it working, and I have no idea what could have possibly gone wrong.

Did you try uninstalling the video card drivers in safe mode?

There really needs to be a facepalm emoticon.  That did it.  The colors are a little off (the purplish pink blocks in Arkanoid are completely purple), but it works fantastically now.  Thanks a ton.

This isn't too big a issue at all. What you will want to do is have mame open in a window and open your video settings. Under your tv settings you will have color options. You will also want to play with your color settings a little bit on your tv as well.

I already fiddled with them quite a bit, but everything I did only seemed to make it worse.  I couldn't just fix the purple with out messing everything else up.  The orange tips of the paddle in Arkanoid are red now as well, but nothing I've tried really helped.  I can deal with it though =)  It's just a tad off.

Then it also sounds as if you would have to tweak the service mode color settings on your tv. For that you would want some test patterns to feed it, but you could get it right. I've tweaked tons of tvs. 99% of crts have usually poor to terrible color and contrast from the factory.

By uninstalling the drivers, it sounds like you're stuck using generic VGA.

What I believe was happening is that you were seeing the Windows booting screens and Safe mode because they're 640x480. Your Windows desktop was actually set to a higher resolution. Your monitor probably just goes into standby when it see's a resolution it can't display instead of giving you a scrambled out-of-sync picture.

Here is what I would do... Reinstall the drivers and boot in Safe Mode.
Right click on the desktop and hit Properties.
Go to the Settings tab and click Advanced down on the lower right.
Click the Adapter tab. At the lower left, click the List All Modes button. Back it down to 640 by 480 True Color and exit.

You might still need to tweak the component settings you mentioned in your video drivers to ensure your card is putting out 480i, but hopefully my instructions will at least help get you to a viewable desktop so you can do that.
Your colors should be great in component mode, worth keeping at.
