Another idea for jukebox decoration
« on: June 17, 2003, 12:27:28 am »
Go to the car section of Wal-Mart - they have these neon tubes for cars for $10 - lots of different colors. They have a cigarette adapter on the end. I bought a cigarette adapter splitter (makes one plug into 2) at Wal-Mart also ($3.50) and I made an adapter so now the neon tube plugs into a PC power supply.

I put this in an arcade game I'm fixing up with neon and plexiglass. Looks awesome and it can beat to the sound of music/noise. I will definitely use one of these for my mp3 jukebox.

If anyone wants pics, I can take some.

Yeah iv seen these but im worried about the flashing to the beat cause it uses a mic to get the beay and if thats insid the juke/cab then it might not work 2 well altho u might be able to wire the soundcard output to the 2 ins on the mic

I Bought a couple of those to try in my jukebox as well.
They suck.  They light up ok but as far as beat to the music they don't flash as I expected. they just kinda dim a little on and of. Ya it's to a sound but not very noticable. That's because it's neon. Better of building something or buying a light that made for this from a Disc Jockey store. Even Modifying something from Spencers or some store that sells posters and lights and stuff.

I run 4 tubes on mine, they flash very well.  I paid a little more than $10 tho'.

the best way is to cut the mic off and solder some wire from the speakers or soundcard so it beats from the direct source instead of the cab where sound echos and flashes on the vibrations.

Also there are 2 kinds 1 flashes to music and other does the same but u can set the tolerence for when to flash so it might flash onlu on beats AKA bass :)

Just picked up a 3 channel color organ from Radio Shack to try to put in my jukebox.

It was on sale in Canada for $15.00 and regularly $70.   It is not the regular christmas light type unit.  It has 36 high power LEDs in 3 groups(red, yellow, green) of 12.   It is powered by a 12V power adapter so is all low voltage DC.  It is housed in a 12 inch by 10.5 inch by 6 inch speaker box with the regular front plate made up of diffused plexi.

The whole thing comes apart by unscrewing the back plate.  All parts are mounted on the back plate including the leds.

It can be driven by an internal mike or has an rca jack for audio in. (mono)
All 3 channels are separately adjustable.

Just thought I would mention it as it has alot of potential for $15 Canadian.   By the way there were only 4 in Edmonton and the flyer came out on Thursday June 19.   You can check the Radio Shack CA web site for stock on this item.

Edit:   RS No 4218905 Color Organ

I really like the way it does it.  it does kind of fade in and out. I think it's cool. I'll post some pics of everyhting in a bit.

Mine don't really dim.  With loud volume they flash on and off.  If the volume is lower, they shoot up and down.  Kinda cool.
