How to secure a TV inside cab?
« on: June 16, 2003, 11:58:31 pm »
I'm ready to place my 24" TV inside a Centipede Cabinet.  This TV  is so damn heavy!

What's the safest way to secure it inside the cab?  I'm staying away from any method that involves penetrating through the side walls.  (I don't want any of the externals to be affected by this)

I'm thinking of building a shelf with 4 legs  (pretty much like a table).  Is this a good idea?  What wood to use for the shelf?  And for the legs?  I'm thinking something STRONG yet light.

Any info appreciated... I'm really afraid to do this incorrectly and damage the TV  - or even worse, the cab.

Thanks!

You won't need legs to do it. Just bolt in some 2x4s to act as the base of the shelf (use 4 screws per side, make them just long enough where they don't come out the other side).  I have one of those HEAVY 21" steel framed pixeltouch monitors mounted that way.

Two angled 2x4's woodscrewed into the sides of your cabinet (which is probably 3/4" wood of some sort) will be fine......get 2 and 3/4" woodscrews and just screw a bunch of em in....just mark the distance from the floor of the cab so you know how high to make each one...oh, and check with a level BEFORE you permanantly secure the 2nd "railing".

Then, you'll have 2" on each side to lay a piece of 1/2" or 3/4" wood down on top of..screw it down and blam, instant shelf.  I also put a flat 2x4 across teh back so the TV wont go sliding out the ass-end  of the cabinet :)

The original monitor support is still there.  I was thinking of using that originally, but it is only glued, and franly, it doesn't seem like it will hold this TV...

Maybe all I need to do is put a couple screws in them to secure them?    Damn, I still feel safer with some legs below the shelf!

I went ahead and used the original Monitor/Panel support.  I had to cut it down in order to lower the shelf.  I plan to put some 1.5" screws through those L brackets.  That oughta secure the shelf and the side supports.

If you look carefully you will see I already put one screw in the middle...   Wanted to make sure it wouldn't show up on the outside.  And it did not  (phew!)

Note I don't give a damn about the innards of the cab  LOL

That internal CP layout support (the blocks on eitehr side inside your cab, which are stapled and glued in.......looks just like the cab I cut up to make my MAME upright!

I ripped em out with a prybar since I didn't need em...
