why the amp and car speakers?
« on: October 31, 2008, 06:21:23 pm »
so as the questions says, why do some of you use car speakers and amps in your arcade/jukebox?  To me i don't see the purpose but then again I'm a newb.  So could someone explain to me the advantages of it and maby links to how to wire it to a computer.  any info would be appreciated

I would assume it is because the amp can run on 12V dc,  which can be connected right to your comouter power supply. Another wold be because the amps are small, yet have a decent amount of power.

i could imagine though that running computer speakers would be easier though, but thats just my opinion.

And car speakers are a different league than pc speakers. From a decent brand, car speakers are often the same as unboxed tower speakers, which gives the ability of great sound. A driver of 12-15 cm is way different than one that is 5cm as seen in PC speaker satelites. PC-system subs often use 15cm drivers, which is kind of ass, as it is a midrange driver in normal speakers.

PC speakers seldom have a sub, its just a single shared woofer. On a crap under powered amp, with a crappy resonant box with a tuned frequancy that will give it a nasty hump at about 100Hz and nothing below it.

This is something I'm currently doing while I'm building my cabinet. I'm installing a car amp from  parts-express.com to run some infinity 4" speakers...35 watts RMS peak 105 watts each. I've got an extra Zalman 400watt computer power supply that I'm powering the AMP with. As well, I will be buying another subwoofer along with a plate amp to power it and properly crossover the correct ranges.  Your 12+volt lines are the yellow from the computer power supply. If you need help with other parts let me know. I'm getting a pretty good lesson on it myself.

As well I'm using a sound blaster audigy card that has plenty of outputs for this.

I have been using a car stereo amp in my MAME cabinet for about 4 years without any problems.  My amp is a cheap RoadGear 2 channel 40 watts RMS power.  I am running  one 10inch woofer, two 5.25 mids and two 3inch tweets.  I am using a radioshack crossover ( non powered)  I had to adjust the gain on the amp and the Mixer controls in Windows to get a good loud volume without distortion.  This thing rocks hard for only 2 x 40watts RMS.  I am very pleased...

You can find my how-to document here, where Zakk is hosting it for me.
