What Would You Do? A Poll...
« on: October 30, 2008, 10:24:27 am »
Sorry...I needed more room to explain the poll..

I picked up a Core2Duo rig recently.  It's up and running in my horizontal MAME cabinet now.  The plan was to remove the 3200XP that was running in the horizontal MAME,  replace it with the Core2Duo and then use the 3200+ to power the driver MAME that is going to be my next project.

All was going as normal until I started playing California Extreme and a couple other driver games that are now functional on the Horizontal MAME cab.  Of course,  controlling with a spinner/button combo sorta sucks,  but it is what it is.

Now,  I also love the Blitz series of games... as well as WG 3D Hockey and a couple other games that benefited from the Core2Duo upgrade.

SO The question is:

Do I keep the Core2Duo rig in the horizontal MAME,  using it to play 3d drivers via spinner/button...as well as keeping the ability to run Blitz, Gauntlet Legends,  etc.... or do I drop the Core2Duo rig in to the Driver MAME cab opening up the world of California Extreme, etc?

I'm going to be the deviant here because I enjoy Blitz, Gauntlet Legends, etc. more than driving games (the glut of driving games in arcades, actually, as well as gun games haven't been encouraging me to visit them).  But our opinions are moot - it's what you prefer most.

I vote for Option C. Get a second C2D rig so you can eat your cake too.

It is a tough call, but there are more driving games available with the c2d, so I would put it in the driving cab. I would say a second c2d would be in order though.

Loaded?  Naw.  The majority of this dough is from selling other arcade related stuff.  I recently sold a Ms. Pac cocktail project for $150,  $50 for a couple of old G07 monitors,  $75.00 for the semi-working Paperboy PCB's,  another $50 for a working 13" G07,  etc., etc., etc.

Have you tried running Blitz? It runs like crap on my dual core with 4 gigs of ram!

...$75.00 for the semi-working Paperboy PCB's...

So as an investor, my vote carries extra weight, right?

I play Blitz, Blitz 99 and 2K all at 100% during gameplay...once in a while I get a sound hiccup.  RAM isn't the answer.  I have only 2GB.  It's speed....and OS.  I went from barely playable with Windows XP (109% benchmarked average with an actual of about 80-90% during gameplay) to almost perfect with Windows XP x64 (155% benchmarked average with actual of 99-100% during gameplay).

I am running at 3.6ghz also...though Blitz is more than playable on Win XP x64 at 3.5ghz too.

I get a sound hiccup a little more often with 99 and 2K,  but it's more than playable...and most of the sound hiccups occur,  strangely enough,  between time on the field (in the engine).

I'd make two full lists: driving games I like that need c2d, and horizontal games I like that need c2d.  I'd rank the games by how much I like them, how much time I play, etc.  Then compare the lists by total number of games, and how the games ranks against each other.  From what the OP said, that's 3 driving games, and 4 horizontal games that need c2d, but little said on how they rank against each other.

I love driving games, but many of the racing games I really like are the top down, 360 degree wheel games.  So... I'd stay horizontal, but only by a hair.
