Chuck
« on: October 28, 2008, 06:36:48 am »
Who saw last night's episode of Chuck. The whole episode was about getting the high score on Missile Command. Chuck had to get to the kill screen on the game to get the code to stop a missile from starting WWIII. The episode captured arcade goodness perfectly even down to the use of the band Rush. Check it out on NBC's website if you missed it. It's a must for all arcade fans.

My wife always tries to get me to watch that show, citing Chuck's TRON poster and numerous video game references to prove its "geek cred", but I find that show offensive much in the way that a minority might find a comedian's stereotypical impersionation of his race offensive.

For instance, Missle Command wasn't programmed by a Japanese guy, and Atari isn't even a Japanese company (nor do they even, you know, "exist" anymore in the context they existed in last night's show).  Also, Tom Sawyer is about 5 minutes long.  Your telling me you can get to the kill screen in any arcade game in 5 minutes?  And what does it even mean when the "mathematical pattern underlying the game is the same as Rush's 1981 hit 'Tom Sawyer'".

I might as well be watching some Disney fairy tale, because that show's writing makes no friggen sense, and quite frankly, is insulting to real geeks all over the world.

On the other hand, how can I possibly not endorse a show that play's "You've got the Touch" from the 1986 Transformers movie during an inspirationaly arcade game warmup scene.

Good thing most of us aren't true geeks then.  ;D

Wait I have a question.  Why was the code inside a missile command?  What if someone mamed it before they needed the code?
Back in MY day we lived on the moon and we had to build a rocket ship from scratch to get to the Earth before we suffocated.

Wait I have a question.  Why was the code inside a missile command?  What if someone mamed it before they needed the code?
It was programmed into the original game of missile command not that particular cabinet, so that once you got a high enough score it went to a kill screen which showed the control codes for the weapons satelite.  They were saying the guy who invented missile command also wrote the software for the weapons satellite (so the guy who wrote missile command actually commanded missiles) and he put the control codes in a place only he could get to.

I was also thinking they got to the high score way too fast, but then I figured who cares it's still entertaining.  Looks like they also briefly talked to Twin Galaxies before making the ep: http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=19&id=1674

Also, one joke I thought was pretty good went something like this:
Chuck: Do you have the Rush song Tom Sawyer?
Friend: Ya, I have every Rush song on my Zune.
Chuck: You have a Zune?
Friend: Pfft, no, just kidding.  I'll get my Ipod.

Hey comic book guy, you forgot to mention they had 4 hours IIRC, to get the cabinet, contact and get the fans there, hook everything up (light show, etc) and get to the kill screen.

Must have MAMEd it with no-throttle turned on.

Still I like the show, even if that one was more far-fetched then usual.

Truth be told, although I love the geekiness of the show (I understand everything they are talking about) the real reason I watch the "Chuck" show is because of Yvonne Strahovski.   :notworthy:

Sorta sounds like the movie Cloak and Dagger.  The code was locked away in a cloak and dagger cartridge, and you had to hit a certain score i think it was to see the code

No official Chuck news to bump this for, but I did just see Southland has been cancelled by NBC before it even gets to air. Why? Because it was deemed to violent and gritty for 9pm. I'll take a leap of faith and hope that NBC gives Chuck a full season order off of this news. All of their shows are tanking badly. They need Chuck back!

Only show I even watch on NBC now is Parks and Recreation. I gave up on Heroes this time around.
