warning very stupid question within
« on: October 27, 2008, 01:27:41 am »
Now for my very stupid newbie question.  I'm doing mame in my cab and ordered my jpac.  Can I get the pinouts for my monitor out and use soft 15khz or do i have to get a different video card to do this?  Really just trying to be cheap about it, cause I will be replacing the monitor for a tv monitor with s video in the near future.

Soft 15kHz should work for any "old" video system. Dunno about the Jpac, I dont think the Jpac will be of any difference. (IE Jpac is for interface). If you are worrying, get the ArcadeVGA board.

I'm trying to avoid buying the arcade vga card because I will be using a tv as a monitor eventually.  Just looking to get by until then.  Just didn't know if I could just use my regular monitor out on my motherboard or if I HAVE to get a serperate video card.

Depends on what video card you're using now.  Tell us what it is and we can help you figure out if you can use it.

Motherboard manual will tell you.  You need to know if that chipset is supported by soft15khz or if it can be forced to 15khz some other way.

I don't have the motherboard manual, this thing is prolly six years old and I don't have any paper work with it.  Is there any thing I can go into in windows and find out?

There is a tool called Belarc Advisor that may tell you that.  Can't remember if it pulls video chipset but I won't be surprised if it does.

According to Dell's support site, it uses integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics. I couldn't find anything more specific.

Edit: Here is another link that may be helpful in identifying your chipset. Always remember...Google is your friend ;D

will do some searching, switching to tv because its much cheaper to go to a bigger display than buying an arcade monitor.

Ok after a little searching looks like my video chipset is prolly Intel 845GL.  Motherboard is Intel® Desktop Board D845GLVA.

Another easy way to get the exact version of the GFX chipset is to go to systeminfo (its in accessories/systemtools). In systeminformation, go to components then display. It will tell you exactly what you have.
