*Sold* Infocus Projector, round 2
« on: October 26, 2008, 07:42:03 pm »
I'm copying most of the text from the previous post since this one has the same defect as the last one I had up for sale.

Up for sale is an Infocus LP70+
http://www.infocus.com/support/Products/Projectors/LP70PLUS.aspx#specifications

It was taken out of use because of a defect along the right edge of the image.
Other than that, the image is great!

These pics are on my wall (blue), so any tint you may notice is because of that.
Also, any speckles you see are from the crappy paint job I did. (looks great till you aim a bright projector at it, go figure!  ;))

Projector, power and vga cables, composite vid cables, and remote.

Looking to get $150 or trade for test equip, arcade stuff, etc...

I bought the first one and let me tell you... that defect is a total nonissue at this price.  $150?  I almost bought this one too as that's less than the cost of a replacement bulb.  IIRC he told me this one has less than 500 hours on it.  If this one sits around more than a couple of days I may end up buying it anyway so don't make this dude wait.

For reference, this is 8-9' across, on off white vinyl siding.  It's not even a decent screen or anything.

Can the image be shifted or shrunk to get rid of the defect, or does it go with the adjustments?

I didn't try too hard but I imagine it would go with the adjustments.  It's not a signal issue.  The pics actually make it look worse than it is because of the contrast in the photo.  I wouldn't use it if I were building an elaborate theater but it is definitely good enough for messing around or for more casual use.  For $150 on a bulb with 85% or more of its life left it's a no brainer for someone looking for a projector.

The line stays where it is no matter what you do with the image.
We have/had about 10 of these here at work and maybe 4 of them ended up looking like this.
From talking the end users about it, my guess is that they haven't been waiting till the fan shuts off automatically before unplugging it, and put it in the case while it was still warm. My guess is something shifted somewhere in the DLP engine slightly blocking the side while it was in the case and still warm.
I managed to get a few fixed by Infocus since they were under warantee but there were a few that had just passed the date and Mgmt decided to just get new ones from a new manufacturer.

Hrm... so they are repairable... question is, could we do it, or is it just dropping in new OEM parts we wouldn't have access to?

Well, they are "kind of" repairable.
Infocus was more than happy to fix my out of warrantee units... for $1200.
All they were going to do was change the entire DLP engine, which is pretty standard with electronics mfgrs... why troubleshoot and repair small items when it's cheaper to swap out the entire assembly?
The insanely high repair price was just a method for them to upsell me anyway.
They offered a discount on a newer model in exchange for the busted ones, soI told them where they could shove it and we switched to Epson projectors  :)

ok that explains a lot and yes I can see why it is a good deal I was just wondering if it was something I should be watching out for when spending full price on a new unit from the company. however it seems to be more of a "I did not read the manual so I messed up your projector that was not mine in the first place so I did not care anyway" mistake made by some one. I have read my manual and it was pretty emphatic about letting the fan run until it was off before unplugging it or anything so I never do infact I leave it plugged in a bit more too so now I have, significantly, more hours on my projector than the bulb has actually seen use of so I would not be surprised if the bulb lasts till nearly double the life span. I am still working on getting a set up to make LED replacements for projector bulbs too (LUXEON has a new one called the rebel that you can get up to 485 lumens from just one tiny board like used in the single LED flash lights and I know there is more than enough room for over 5 of these in the right configuration inside the existing bulb compartment of my infocus

It's a design flaw, IMO.  If it is that important the fan should run until it no longer needs to run regardless of if the plugged in or not.  A simple rechargeable battery on the board could power the fan for quite a while without a problem.  A plausible use case should not result in hardware failure.

No doubt! Why isn't there a rechargeable battery pack on board? Hell, a compartment for a 9V battery would suffice.

Best guess is that it's both an "economy business model" and a "portable model" so cost and size were driving factors.

Second best guess is that they didn't test use cases that would be precluded by reading the manual.
