Monitor advice
« on: October 25, 2008, 05:21:57 pm »
I've been planning to build an arcade cab for 2 or 3 years now but with children and work and things, it got a little delayed. Now I think is the time to get started. I read the 'Project Arcade' book a good while ago, but wondered if my choice of monitor should now change, due to the change in technology etc.
I really need help in knowing what type of monitor would be best (TFT/CRT, size, definition etc). Is it worth attempting a rotating monitor, or should I stick to a fixed larger monitor?  :dunno
I will be looking at building a standard sort of multi-use cab, for playing a wide range of mame games and emulators. Im not too fussy about picture authenticy, Im more worried about compatability. Size is also a bit of a factor, I would rather not have a really deep cabinet to house a large CRT, but I don't want to sacrifice size for quality.

I was going to try to do a rotating monitor for a while. Then I played Donkey Kong on a 25" vertical monitor, and I really didn't like it. A 25" horizontal monitor is really close to a 19" when displaying a vertical game. It is not a perfect solution, but for the most part it works well.

unless you're using an LCD, don't use a rotating monitor.

I got a first hand demo of what happens when you rotate a 27" monitor (while on) from horizontal to vertical.  Purity goes to hell!  (i.e. it looks like you have a magnet on the edges of the monitor).

It works fine if you degauss after rotating.  In fact, IMO a rotating CGA monitor is the ultimate display for a MAME setup.  If I had the engineering knowledge (and time), I would probably have done something like that.

I don't seem to able to find a non-widescreen 27" monitor that is reasonably priced here in the UK. I might instead try doing a rotational 19" or 20" LCD monitor. Does anybody know of any good examples or tutorials of how to do this?

Don't go for rotating LCD's.
First: the ones that are suitable for vertical mount (thus are non-TN) can be counted on one hand: HP LP2065, Samsung 214T, Dell Ultrasharp 2001FP, Eizo S2100 and the NEC 2190. These displays are so expensive, a 27 inch widescreen is cheaper and has about the same vertical size.
Second: Don't think there are other options. 17 and 19 inch is NOT 4:3, but 5:4, and most of them are TN, and TN mounted vertical absolutely sucks.
Third: The risk of having the mechanism turn out to be ugly non functional crap with stinking bezels.
Fourth: The risk you spend so much money on your stinking rotation mech, that you could have bought 2 screens and an extra set of control for vertical classics in the first place and use 1 for a dedicated vertical Mame machine.
